Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This beautifully produced reflexology manual emphasizes the importance of the caring exchange of touching, especially in families where physical affection is not a usual interaction. Gillanders, a practicing reflexologist and teacher in the field, describes the 5,000-year-old therapy as releasing blocked energy by applying pressure to reflex points on the feet or hands, thereby restoring harmony to bodily functions. The manual provides detailed maps of the hands and feet of babies, children, and adults, followed by basic reflexology principles and instructions for a short foot-relaxation session and complete foot and hand treatments. All techniques are illustrated with conveniently placed four-color drawings. Successive chapters present reflexology protocols for common ailments of babies, children, and adults; the author focuses throughout on stress-related and life-stage problems. Sidebars suggest such supportive strategies as dietary changes, breathing and relaxation exercises, and herbal remedies to supplement the reflexology sessions. End matter includes a list of further reading. Penny Spokes

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book for Every Human Being!, April 18, 2000

This review is from: The Family Guide to Reflexology (Paperback)
I've been interested in reflexology for some time, but could only find charts with little explanation, or books with no hands-on instructions. This book is the answer to my quest. Wonderful charts for feet and hands, and combined with specific and general instructions--I couldn't be happier. This book also has a holistic approach combining aromatherapy and diet; along with personal and family applications. Ms. Gillanders shares her knowledge, her secrets and herself beautifully in this book. Get one for yourself and everyone on your Christmas list!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Useful Guide, April 30, 2007

(REAL NAME)
I checked this book out from the library and was so pleased that I decided to buy it. I found the colorful foot and hand maps (charts) to be not only interesting but also very helpful and informative. They tell you exactly what other part of your body corresponds to each part of your hand and foot. I have not tried everything in the book yet, but I have had a lot of success with the foot relaxation session and complete feet workouts. I tried them out on family members who were suffering from aches and pains from daily life- within the half hour to an hour that I massaged their feet according to the guide, they not only felt pain free but light, free and filled with health. We do not have any family members suffering from chronic ailments, but she does have special sections dealing with issues such as heart problems. I plan on using this book to help us the next time we should have a sore throat, or back pain, or any other problems, to see if I can't alleviate the pain without medicine. This is a wonderful book that I recommend to anyone who would like to spend quality time with their family, and who would like to explore preventative care instead of constantly popping aspirin for daily life.
