Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The Family Guide to Sex and Relationships is a big, glossy book with drawings, photographs, charts, and interesting sidebars, as well as straightforward information, all about sex. This reference guide is for all ages--from kids just learning about the birds and the bees to would-be parents who need a few details on how to track basal body temperature. Richard Walker covers the gamut of human sexuality. In addition to discussing birth, puberty, menopause, and old age, he addresses specific issues such as alternative family structures and sex as an older person.

From Library Journal

Although most people would agree that discussing sexual issues with family members or partners is very important, doing so may be awkward or embarrassing. This work is designed to open the lines of communication and provide current, nonjudgmental information about sexual topics. Written in lay language and well illustrated by sex educator Walker, coauthor of How Sex Works (DK Pub., 1994), the book covers growth and development, puberty, sexuality, contraception, pregnancy and birth, menopause, sexually transmitted diseases, and family dynamics. Males and females receive equal treatment, and important subjects such as illness and sex, single parenting, gay and lesbian families, and sexual offenses are also considered. A glossary and referral list supplement the text. This excellent source will answer most questions for adolescents, parents, and teachers seeking accessible information about human sexuality. Highly recommended for all collections.?Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., Cal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hey guys! Go for it!!, July 11, 1999
This review is from: The Family Guide to Sex and Relationships (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book, for those who really wish to understand what all that thing is about! In specific, I feel that this is for those sexually-unitiated fellers who haven't really had even a wisp of what sex actually means! Going further, I would suggest this book not only for the sex-novice but also for all those who claim that they have "the supreme knowledge" about sex! In my personal case, myself and my spouse who weren't already aware about many specific points on sex, became well-aware and well-instructed by the actual nuances and practices-to-be; our case is something which is widespread in secluded socities, where sexual education is a taboo - Both of us are from India which is very secluded and fussy about these sort of things, due to philosophical and religious affiliations. When both us had indeed given-up trying to understand the modalities of making a "union", the so-called masters of the art couldn't succintly put it forth to us. That was however made a reality by this book, which I first had an oppurtunity to review from a US library! The author has not only dealt with the modalities of sex, but with problems involved in unprotected sex, use of condoms, family planning and problems faced by both sexes both mental and physical during various stages of union and conception, and the ways to resolve them. Words fail me when I try to praise the author! I should say that he has made a wonderful contribution to the world, through this illustrative book!
