Grade 4-7-- As Jennifer rereads the letter she has written about her family to the ``Dear Denise'' column in her favorite magazine, she ponders the advice to put herself in other people's shoes to get a different perspective. So when younger siblings Emily and Robert fight, Jennifer treats them with love and understanding; when older siblings Mary Lou and Michael are obnoxious, Jennifer becomes deferential in her treatment of them. The advice works so beautifully that she expands the technique, using it on Brandon, a good-looking newspaper boy. But it backfires and Jennifer is left without a date for her eighth-grade graduation dance. This first-person narrative humorously shows the innermost feelings of a Catholic schoolgirl's life; Ewing writes with an unerring sense of character and wit. The story moves along swiftly, and is interspersed with black-and-white drawings. Readers will identify with the events that happen to these middle schoolers. An enjoyable choice. --Jana R.
