As a longtime family traveler - and travel writer - I've seen much written about the ins and outs of family travel. However, I've not read such an inspirational book as this one. From helpful tips to detailed packing lists to journaling ideas to ways to make travel easier and more fun, The Art of Traveling with Kids is pure genius. Whether your kids are teens or babies, and whether you've had decades of experience with family travel, or are just starting out, you'll find many gems in this book. I sat down and devoured it in a few hours, and have too-many-to-count post-its sticking out for pages I want to reference again and again. Highly recommended!

I consider our family (including a 7-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy) well-travelled. We are about to become even more! I ordered the book from France because I had become addict to the authors' blog since I succeeded having my kids walk around Roma (Italy) 4 to 6 hours a day by just following their advice. Get prepared! Involve the whole family in planning the trip! We are currently preparing a trip to China and will definitely use the tips and packing lists from the book.

Not so many families are willing to travel with kids, as it does take a lot of energy. However, Bill & Ashley make it sound fun, adventurous and easy! And more importantly, through their advice, do allow to make it a fun adventure for each of their readers.

Our family is going on a year-long trip, and though we're excited, we've also been nervous about how to ensure that it becomes the trip of a lifetime that we're hoping for. This book is going to be our guideline for keeping it fun for the kids, which will inevitably make it more fun for us as parents. We're purposely waiting until our kids are old enough to appreciate what they're getting to see and experience, and the book helps by sorting suggestions by the child's age. There are so many great ideas, some of which are already family favorites to do at the dinner table, when out to eat, when traveling by car, etc. Thanks to "The Art of Traveling with Kids," I'm MUCH more confident now about our plans, and our anticipation grows daily.

All I can say is that I wish I had this book 10 years ago. I've got two kids, and we have traveled a fair bit with them, but it is always a challenge to keep them engaged and interested. This book covers guidelines and helpful tips for travelling with kids from the early stages of planning a trip to packing to airports to the plane to the trip itself. It doesn't tell you where you should go to appease the kids, it helps your kids enjoy the sites that the adults want to go to, including museums, cultural and historical sites. Every chapter is full of great suggestions - some of the sidebars are really helpful: "Fourteen Quiet Activities for the Plane" or "A Dozen Games While You are Waiting" (for food, or a bus, etc). There is so much to be gained from travelling with your kids and this book helps to prove that it doesn;t need to be so scary.

What a terrific resource for parents planning adventurous travel with young children! Full of great tips, packing list, fun destinations and endless ideas for making the best of family trips. My favorite part was all of the suggestions for journals and ways to preserve children's memories after the trip is over. Highly recommended!

Excellent tool for planning, preparing, and executing trips with the family. Tips and tricks for every possible scenario. Includes tons of ways to keep kids happy and engaged, plus a fantastic list of ideas for the ultimate travel journal (much more that stuffing ticket stubs into a book). I highly recommend for any family--particularly families with young children. Very easy to read; well laid out; useful lists; perfect reference guide.

I just finished this book- what a great treasure chest of ideas for anyone who is planning to travel with kids! I absolutely love the practical tools like the museum activity sheets, the budget spreadsheet, the travel journal ideas, the ideas for special gear. We have 4 children, ages 6-9 and we travel frequently, domestic and abroad, and I can honestly say I learned so many new tips with this guide. Whether it is your first local road trip or you're a seasoned traveler taking your kiddos abroad, you will really appreciate the tips in Family on the Loose.

This book follows exactly my train of thought in how kids should be involved in travelling - exploring the world is such a great way to enhance their knowledge, experience, development, pretty much everything, and the suggestions in this book are excellent ways to do so. I particularly liked the attention paid to pre-trip planning and getting kids involved and excited early on, rather than just taking off on a plane with them without much discussion or planning. Even better, I was pleased that the final section of the book had plenty of good ideas for how to keep the trip alive in their memories after the inevitable return to daily life back home.

Very well worth a read for any parent who wants their child to get the most out of travel - a real gift you can give your kids!
