Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Because Georgianna "Georgi" Thomasina Beverly looks much younger than she really is, people constantly think she is a fresh chit just out of the schoolroom. Therefore, it is no surprise to Georgi that Philip Hartford, Lord Everhart, would think the same thing, especially because the first time they meet, Georgi is scrambling around a statue in the churchyard like some hoydenish girl. Philip, who is new to the area after inheriting a rundown estate from a distant reclusive relative, soon discovers he needs Georgi's help when Georgi's matchmaking aunt begins pushing her daughter, the beautiful Cassandra, in his direction. Both Georgi and Philip enjoy their new friendship, but neither one can deny that the idea of a romance between them isn't tempting. Savery adds delightfully amusing, wonderfully quirky secondary characters, including a wealthy widow in the market for a biddable husband, into the mix of her latest sparkling Regency. John Charles

(REAL NAME)
A CONFOUNDING FEMALE...Miss Georgianna Beverly is quite content with her life just as it is. Happily unshackled, she is free to pursue her secret talent as an author of popular poetry. Certainly she is not opposed to love, in fact, she is quite skilled in the art of matchmaking for her sisters and cousins. But what man would ever want to wed such a contrary miss as herself--a dedicated bluestocking who would rather debate politics than dance; who prefers the company of books over simpering husband-hungry females?
A CONFIRMED BACHELOR...Lord Everhart had nothing in mind but a scheme of mutual convenience when he first set eyes on the sprite of a girl whose quick intelligence belied her youthful appearance. Though Georgi is not concerned with the ways of the ton, she happily agrees to help him foil the scheming ape leaders determined to see him wed. While their sham courtship raises eybrows, no one is more stunned than his lordship when he realizes that somewhere in this charade, he has completely lost his heart. Now, he must persuade Georgi to do the same...

3.0 out of 5 stars Chewing Gum for the Mind, December 3, 2011
Jeanne Savery's THE FAMILY MATCHMAKER is about a young woman mistaken for a teenager. Georgianna Beverly, 'Georgi', meets Lord Everhart for the first time while on top of a statue in a parish yard; she is cleaning it. Everhart, a confirmed bachelor (aren't they all?), has inherited some local land and is on his way to inspect it. This is the beginning of their unusual friendship with a little of the 'ick' factor; he constantly refers to Georgi as 'my child'.

Georgi has been raised by her grandfather and has been educated to be a thinker. Just shy of turning twenty years old she is a writer and tends to speak her mind, something which gets her into trouble when she is around others. Everhart makes a pact with her to keep a mama from putting him in a compromising position so he is forced to wed her daughter. Things backfire because he starts to have feelings for Georgi while he still believes her to be so young. He knows it is wrong but he can't quite figure out why the young lady acts like a 16-year-old and then appears older.

There are lots of misunderstandings among family members and friends. The plot is pure fluff and squeaky clean; light kisses at the most. I kept expecting more; hence, the three stars for OK. If you are looking for a Regency romance that is light and doesn't tax your mind, try THE FAMILY MATCHMAKER.
