I guess this was a sucessful purchase, as I just passed my FNP board exams. I had previously been using Fitzgeralds review course and test review only. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not that great
I did fine with 3 other prep courses, except this one. Scored in the 70's. The questions are not at the entry level and sometimes are so detailed it is simply your best guess as to what the author is trying to assess.

example: what would you ((not)) recommend to a parent's child with asthma.
- no air conditioning in room...

This text is quite different from the previously mentioned ones. The format is very student friendly, with questions on the front of page and answers/rationale on the back. There were a very few mistakes (less than 1%)and all info followed current evidence-based practice guidelines. It is a good chunk of money to add to the rest of graduation/certification expenses, but I would say it is well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend, February 20, 2006

This was an excellent test preparation for boards. I purchased four different books, and attended the Fitzgerald review, and found this to be the highest quality BOOK of the group. I thought it was better in that it is in the true format of the test with multiple questions from various areas in random sequence, and not just by subject section. The questions paralleled the difficulty of the exam and included succinct explanations of the rationale. HIGHLY Recommended!!!! I suggest attending a Fitzgerald review if possible as well, dynamic. BTW, I passed the AANP without difficulty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review and Practice Book, March 25, 2006
This review is from: Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Prep Exams (Paperback)
I recently passed the ANCC FNP certification exam in February 2006. I used this to supplement a review book that I had and found it to be an excellent review and practice preparation resource. The book isn't overwhelming and I believe it helped me to successfully pass the exam.

I did fine with 3 other prep courses, except this one. Scored in the 70's. The questions are not at the entry level and sometimes are so detailed it is simply your best guess as to what the author is trying to assess.

example: what would you ((not)) recommend to a parent's child with asthma.
- no air conditioning in room
- seal mattress in vinyl
- remove carpeting
- no smoking in the home

The answer is no air conditioning in room.

There are tons of questions like this. They follow no recent recommendations or evidence. It seems like they just construct questions that are based on personal preference.

I just hope the national board is not like this book.

Fitzgerald, Leik, and Mosby's online FNP prepartion are awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well pleased, February 21, 2007
This review is from: Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Prep Exams (Paperback)
I recently purchased this title and the family nurse practitioner review/study guide by the same author. I have found that this book is well written in the fact that the questions are on one page and the answers/rationale are on the next page. I am also using review cds (not by the same author) and have found that the information mimics information presented on the review (which helps cement the concepts). I read the questions and answers on a certain topic and then go to the study guide/review book and look up information that I may have questions about. Overall, a great purchase and hopefully in the end it will pay for itself.

addendum: I took my certification exam today and passed without difficulty. I used this book towards the end of my review to narrow down my weak and strong points. The practice tests at the end were very helpful in my study process. The questions were similar to the questions on the ANCC examination.

4.0 out of 5 stars FNP exam prep, January 5, 2007
This review is from: Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Prep Exams (Paperback)
This book has lots of great example questions for the NP exam. There are explanations for all of the questions that let you know why a certain answer is "more" correct than another one. My husband and I both used this book as prep for the ANCC exam. It's a very useful tool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sub-Adequate- a bit outdated., November 21, 2006
By
This review is from: Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Prep Exams (Paperback)
This was the first review book I purchased and have purchased additional resouces. No CD ROM (useful for taking CATs) and the tests in the back of each chapter are minimalistic. Some questions are still utilizing suggestions for treatement that aren't even on the market any more. Suggest looking elsewhere or get this along with other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great review book!, September 10, 2007
This review is from: Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Prep Exams (Paperback)
I just got finished taking my Adult NP certification exam with the AANP and I think that this book was EXTREMELY helpful! I did use a couple other books and did the Fitzgerald Review but this was in my opinion the best for me! There are a ton of questions and it is so helpful to see the rationale. By the way, I passed... that is why I am recommending this so highly!!! :)

This book served as an excellent addition to my study material. I had completed the Fitzgerald review course (Highly recommended!) and ordered this book to supplement my study. It was GREAT! It is a truely Question/Answer book. Questions on the front of the page and answers on the back. It also included 4 practice exams. They were very tough exams and made me really dig for the answer. Very similar to the boards!!
Great at teaching you how to eliminate answers.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone sitting for the Adult/Family boards.
By the way, I passed my boards--and this book helped!

This book is great for studying for tests during the FNP program. I'm sure it will help me with my exam as well because it is very thorough! I wish I would've had it through my entire MSN program.
