About the Author
Troy Johnson is the senior editor of Riviera magazine. For six years, he hosted and cowrote Fox Rox, a television show about underground music, for which he won two Emmy Awards. He also hosted Outta Left Field, a pregame TV show for the San Diego Padres. A former music editor for San Diego CityBeat, he appears regularly on the radio show These Days on KPBS. He has written for Billboard, Mojo, Paper, Rolling Stone, the San Diego Gay and Lesbian Times, and Spin. He lives in San Diego, and he loves his mother.This is his first book.

Family Outing is a "memoir" worth reading. Troy Johnson, in his own inimitable style, fearlessly looks at himself, his family, and societal norms with remembered angst, tenderness, and wit. His ability to "hold the mirror" for all concerned is uncanny, and his sense of humor contagious. He is not afraid to tackle some of the issues of human sexuality - a still-taboo subject for many.....doing it with searing honesty, laugh-out-loud humor, and sensitive poignancy. He takes the words, 'gay'. 'lesbian' and 'homosexual' out of any politically correct dryness and brings them to life in an engaging, intimate talk with the reader. I highly recommend it!

Everything you never wanted to know about the inner workings of a teen mind obsessed with not only his sexuality but, fer godsake, his mother's! A quick read. Fascinating. Compelling. A book sorely needed for the homophobic, intolerent times we live in. Kudos to Troy and his blunt honesty.

Mr.Johnson brings an important issue to light with wit and sensitivity. It is also a well written book beyond the autobiographical nature of the content. It captures the speech and narrative of the 1990's.
A well done first effort. More, please!
