Product Description

Editorial Review

A team of players, sharing one marker and equipped with four Good Things is heading down the path to Granny's House in this 12-inch-square boardgame. The path contains Lucky Spots where players win additional Good Things. The path also has obstacles, Oh-Oh Spaces, which players can overcome by using a Good Thing card. Players work cooperatively and use logic and imagination in choosing an appropriate Good Thing. When they encounter a bear, they might choose to play the honey-pot card. Sunglasses can offset the blazing sun. Setbacks occur when players don't have a Good Thing that suits the Oh-Oh. In that case, they have to retreat and gather more Good Things before continuing on. The object is to reach Granny's House with a Good Thing to give her. Some Good Things are better gifts than others are; Granny might prefer the picnic lunch to the pile of rocks! --Wendy Slotboom

Product Description

An adventure game designed to encourage thought and imagination in young children.

On our journey to Granny's we go through Dark Woods, cross a Stream, need to be very careful passing a Sleepy Bear, etc. We decide what to bring along. Maybe our Dog will help us; maybe a basket of Food; perhaps some Sticks and a Rope. Players will have to use these items to invent ways to deal with whatever Obstacle they meet.

Includes: 12 x 12" board, team mover, die, good things tokens. © 1985

5.0 out of 5 stars great creative game, July 26, 1999

I was a little skeptical when I found out the game is one of cooperation. The players all play as a team instead of against each other but competition isn't the entertaining factor. I was amazed at the ideas my kids were coming up with. In the game, when you come to an obstacle, you must come up with an idea of how to use an object to overcome the obstacle. My kids were really coming up with new ways to use the objects. This game was a real plus for me because it gave the kids a chance to work on their creativity, and vocabulary. They got a kick out it and it caused no stress or hard feelings like so many competitive games we know. I'm currently searching for more Family Pastimes games as they are a hit with my kids.

As you walk to Granny's house through the woods, you encounter difficulties...a sleeping bear, a river, a forest. Along the way you gather various items and when you get to the difficulties, you have to figure out which item will help overcome the difficulty. You could stand on the box to get over the fence or use the umbrella in the sun. Our son came up with many creative solutions for which items to use (like having the dog dig under the fence.) The first time we played it. Each play afterwards he used the same items for the same reasons. There was no more creativity. So, if you want this to keep being creative, you have to make your own cards with different items. Also, this game can be really long. We make it go faster by starting out with more items. We really like other pasttime games like Cooperative Games / Snowstorm or Cooperative Game Harvest the Crops Before Winter Comes, Harvest Time

I got this game along with some others for my classroom for a unit to teach cooperation. My students really enjoyed it. They asked for them again and again on inside recess days. They have a great time working together. Harvest Time and Growly in the Garden are other favorites. They are not great quality, but if you go to the company website you will see that they are just a small family owned company. High durability is sacrificed for low price. They also use recycled materials on some of their products if being green is important to you.
