Product Description

Amazon.com

Children learn the benefits of cooperation in this innovative game from Family Pastimes. Each player tends a small garden composed of four different types of vegetables. The object is for all players to harvest all the vegetables before winter arrives. If one of the four colors comes up when the color-coded die is thrown, then each player may harvest one vegetable of that color from his or her own garden or from any of the other gardens. If the die comes up black, each player may choose which color vegetable to pick. If the die shows a white dot, then a Winter piece must be placed on the board. The game ends when all players harvest all vegetables, or when all six Winter pieces are filled in.

Cooperation is encouraged with a few special rules: if a player's garden has been completely harvested and he or she rolls the white dot, then a winter piece is removed. Players are thus subtly encouraged to concentrate on one garden at a time, instead of each tending only to their own gardens. --Michael Fehlauer

Product Description

This game draws the most fan mail! First, gardens are planted. Then everyone rolls the special die to do the harvesting. The job is to harvest the gardens before winter comes. will we get them all? Maybe, if we remember to help each other out! A simple but challenging game for board game beginners. Includes: 12 x 12" board, die, 48 vegetables, winter and spring puzzle pieces, and rules for harder "spring planting" game.

Our customers say: "Ryan (5) feels very important getting all his vegetables in and then helping me." - Saskatchewan, Canada

Play as friends, not as enemies! Family Pastimes games foster the spirit of cooperation. Players help each other climb a mountain, make a community, complete a space exploration... They never play against each other. After all, the initial impulse to play a game is social; that is, we bring out a game because we want to do something together. How ironic then that in most games, we spend all our efforts trying to bankrupt someone, destroy their armies - in other words, to get rid of one another!

At Family Pastimes we believe that people of different ages and abilities should be able to play side by side, each making their best contribution. We are all there together when we finish the game to take joy in our successes and wonder how we might work together even better the next time we play. Thus, Family Pastimes games will prove to be a friendly form of fun. Socialization, entertainment, academic learning, character growth, etc. - whatever your objectives, we invite you to realize them by cooperative means. We hope you enjoy playing and learning together!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Family Game March 8, 2007
We bought this game for our two children when they were 3 and 4, and we were pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it is to play, even for mom and dad. It isn't a competition game as much as it is a cooperation game, so if having a clear cut winner is what you want, this probably isn't the game for you.

Each player has a farm with four different crops to harvest before autumn turns to winter. You roll the die to determine which crop you may pick or if you have to move everyone closer to winter. If winter comes before the crops are harvested, then there might not be enough food for winter, but the object is for everyone to harvest their crops before the onset of winter.

The neat thing about this game is that really the best way to get the harvest in is for everyone to work together to harvest each other's crops and not just work individually on your own crop. There is an additional element (which we have not yet played) to the game where you can plant the garden first and then harvest it. It is for more advanced players, but I think a young player could easily play it too after having played the easier version a few times.

I highly recommend this game for families of all ages. It's been a blessing to watch the kids want to help other players more than they want to harvest their own crop!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable! December 1, 2008
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this last year for my competitive 4 year old. She has difficulty playing other games (she can get rather upset when she loses - you know how that is!), so this game is a breath of fresh air - we both enjoy it and it's nice for us to finish playing a game, rather than having to stop when she gets mad. We have fun coming up with "recipes" to make as we harvest as well.

Our 3 y/o loves this game and we enjoy it too. It's pictorial, so no number or word recognition is required, and the cooperative aspect makes it so much more enjoyable than Candyland!

Our 3-4 year old boy LOVES this game!
What a difference from playing other traditional winner/looser games.
It removes the stress/anxiety and leaves the pure enjoyment of playing against the dice
and the rewarding feeling of working together towards a common goal.

The board itself and the pieces are a little cheaply made (low end cardboard cutouts).
But other than the cheap feeling of the board, the game itself is a winner.

Easy for my 4 year old to get, he enjoyed the puzzle in the middle. I like how you can make it a little different as they get used to the basic game by adding in the planting phase. Only issue I had was game board was a little wrinkled where it attached to board, but was still fine to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cooperative game for the whole family June 19, 2013

We purchased this game as a gift for our daughter on her fifth birthday. We are already in touch with the urban homesteading vibe, so this game seemed like a sure thing, especially since it stresses cooperative play. Harvest Time has not disappointed. The game play is simple, yet not too elementary, with good looking game-pieces and a die to roll for the kinesthetic-minded folks out there. Up to four players can play and there is a standard and extended version, depending on the available time and interest from the participants. It is just a great little game. I highly recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointed by this board game January 27, 2011
Durability: 3.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 1.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game because it promised a "green" experience for the entire family. i must say, i was highly disappointed. is it called "green" because you are dealing with vegetables? So be it. My family could not find any interest in this game, not even my four year old whom we bought the game for. I did not find the added value of this game. don't waist your money on this.
