4.0 out of 5 stars Strange wording, but helped me pass the boards
I just passed the boards today, and wanted to comment about this book.

I will be honest that this book has some strange/poorly written questions:
i.e. The cranial nerve responsible for vision is Cranial Nerve:
a. 2.
b. II.
c. two.
d. ii.
Some answers contradict Fitzgerald and leave you shaken because you don't know who's...

I just passed the adult NP exam in late July. This collection of questions did NOT help me at all in my review. I think a compilation like this is distracting from the "meat" of the content needed to review. The questions appeared random and it did nothing for my level of confidence or focus. After short previews I went on to use my other much more substantial sources:...

I just passed the boards today, and wanted to comment about this book.

I will be honest that this book has some strange/poorly written questions:
i.e. The cranial nerve responsible for vision is Cranial Nerve:
a. 2.
b. II.
c. two.

Some answers contradict Fitzgerald and leave you shaken because you don't know who's right (i.e. Hollier says that fingers are most affected by OA, whereas Fitzgerald says knees/hips); plenty of these. I was scoring in the mid-high 80's with Leik, and then dropped down to the low 70's with Fitzgerald.

Truth is, the boards do have many of the weird questions that Hollier asks, and her answers are correct (i.e. only Hollier accurately states that with a strain/sprain, to start immediate functional rehabilitation instead of telling them to rest; she also states correctly that microalbumin should be checked in 5 years from diagnosis with DMI, and immediately with DMII.) AND Hollier includes professional and research questions, which we need more of, so thank you.

Aside from the weird questions though, the boards usually have many easier logical clinical/cultural/ethical questions. I hated it at first, but I guess Hollier just has you think about the other more obscure questions that will be asked?

Oh, and with such few books, and the importance of running practice tests, this one has three full length tests plus questions for each topic. That is appreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, May 8, 2009

This is an excellent book to have BEFORE you get out of NP school. This book, along with Fitzgerald's book, and Zerwekh/Claborn are essential to have during school. It will help you study for tests and retain material for later use. I am either going to buy the CDs or go to a live Hollier review. This book is a great investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Help for ANP Exam!, August 20, 2009
This review is from: Adult and Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Practice Questions (Paperback)
I purchased a number of review materials for a re-certfication (after many years) of the ANP exam. This was by far the best help Great questions and explinations. I think you would still need a Content Review book, but for example questions, this was terrific and the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful!!, September 16, 2011

Hi Everybody! I took the exam end of the ANCC Adult NP exam and passed. I just found I was searching for some concrete advice and thought some of you might find this helpful!

What to take the ANCC or ANP? It came down to discussing to former NP students. In the circle of students I knew no one had taken the ANP exam and that made me wonder how come? There are rumors that the east coast hospitals prefer ANCC over ANP, but I could not find information to confirm that rumor. I did not want to take the chance of going against what the majority has done thus far. I am planning to stay in the Northeast area so hence my decision.

In regards to the exam I feel like I studied the right amount for myself ( 3 months.) The exam turned out to be somewhat I expected and mostly not what I expected. The ANCC exam I feel is more geared towards knowing the role of nurse practitioner and research oriented questions ( I felt as if I was re-reading my research!) Of course, it could be that I remember this because this is what I found frustrating. It is quite possible those questions I found frustrating were the 25 questions that were thrown out. The clinical questions regarding disease management were straight forward and I felt like Fitzgerald herself wrote some of the questions (possible, right?)

I feel what prepared me the most was a combination of my class lectures, Fitzgerald and Hollier study guides!

In regards to tips for next round of students:

1) Attend the Fitzgerald course soon after graduation.

The course provides a review book, following each section there are print out. Print each area out. She does not cover three topics during the actual lecture. It is the teenager portion, elderly portion and legal/ethical area.

2) When you finished with the review course, the first step you should take is listen to the three lectures on line.

If it is possible the students should purchase the audio lectures. I always learned by listening to lectures so I found myself listening to lectures on subway rides, car rides and at work on break. The students should aim to have the review book studied thoroughly 4-6 weeks.

3) Find a source for practice questions.

I found it frustrating to find a source to complete review questions. After reading reviews on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, I bought Certification Practice Questions by Amelie Hollier. In the review there are mentions of grammar errors and even students disagreeing with answers to questions. However, I found the questions helpful and realistic compared to other sources. The portion I truly found helpful was labeled professional issues. The author everyone kept talking about online was Zerwekh, however, her book was not available for purchase when I tried ( August 2011.)

4)Students should start putting together notes into packets so they can easily be accessible during their last semester. Your class lectures really are the basic foundation to a successful board.

5) Take the exam as soon as possible!

Obviously, the student should feel comfortable, but do not let it go beyond the summer.

I think a compilation like this is distracting from the "meat" of the content needed to review. The questions appeared random and it did nothing for my level of confidence or focus. After short previews I went on to use my other much more substantial sources: 1)the ANCC Adult Nurse Practitioner: Nursing Review and Resource Manual, 2008 2)Adult Nurse Practitioner Certification: Intensive Review by Maria T. Codina Leik 3) Barkley & Associates audio CD review course.
Hope this helps in people's search.

The Certification questions helped me prepare for the certification exam. Of course it cannot be your only source of review. With each question, there is an explanation for each choice. It helps identify what areas you need to furter study. The questions posed and how they are structured are similar to the ones on the exam.It prepares you to take the exam. It was an excellent last step in my preparation for the certification exam.

It's a little out there, and while it's the only two prep test to use ( otherone being Fitzgerald), it doesnt realy reflect how the questions are structured on the exam. It's something to practice on, sometimes the answers dont really match the questions or they are inaccurate- you would think someone would proofread this before they publish it..Also no research or theory or policy- if you preping for the ANCC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prerequisite for your job, December 22, 2011
This review is from: Adult and Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Practice Questions (Paperback)
I passed AANP FNP with 90% in November 2011. I was very serious about the test b/c in our days it is a prerequisite to get a job. The first book you have to have is Certification Review by Amellie Hollier. It is basic, easy to read, but everything from this book you will have in the test. The most value of the book in that it has the best rationale and absolutely clear explanations and no mistakes. All other books (x-cept Fitzgerald's) have up to 20-30% mistakes or confusions.
The second book is M. Fitzgerald's Practice preparation. This going beyond and above, You will find a lot of things for your future practice. The best way to study this book is to get the lecture disks, M. Fitzgerald is a brilliant lecturer.
On the third place are two books: Winland-Brown/Dunphy and Zerwekh/Claborn. Both books have practice questions CDs.
I used all 4 books. Good luck!

I bought this book 1 week before my certification exam. I had already completed Fitgerald's book twice and listened to her CD's. While I think that Fitzgerald gives a more comprehensive review, this book was great to just practice taking questions and kill time before the exam. I passed and thought it was helpful.

I have the CD's from the Holleur live seminar. This book provided questions to do after listening. The format is nice, and the information complements what I learned from Fitzgerald. However, would not go into ANCC exam without having listened to Fitzgerald CD's and reading the exam prep book. Also nice to read Leik, but be careful there is some wrong information in that book.
