Being a firefighter has its compensations. Fighting fires is a thrill, and rescue work gets the adrenaline rushing. But for new Dallas firefighter Ethan Basque, rescuing Kathryn (Kat) Holiday and her daughter is even more special. Not all of the sparks flying were of the firefighting sort as Ethan brings the family to safety--including the danger-defying cat. And when he sees that Kathryn is having trouble making ends meet, it's only natural for him to want to continue the rescue. Now, if he can just persuade his fire-fighting buddies to keep their hands off--because this is one rescue Ethan doesn't want to share.

Kat knows Ethan's kind. Her ex-husband was a rescuer too--who moved on as soon as Kat showed signs that she actually could stand on her own two feet. Now, she's determined to prove to herself and to the world that she doesn't need to be rescued, that she really can manage on her own. Sure, Ethan is hot enough to nearly boil her blood--well, Kat doesn't have a great track record on picking suitable guys. She's determined to keep her distance. Except sometimes a strong pair of arms really does come in handy.

Author Kara Lennox kicks off the Firehouse 59 series with a powerful story exploring whether independent and strong characters can find romance without sacrificing a part of themselves. Both Ethan and Kat have a lot of growing to do before they're ready for a permanent relationship and Lennox does an excellent job showing their transformation. It isn't just the sexual heat that draws them together, but something a lot more long-lasting.

Lennox did a lot of research on the firefighting aspects of her story and the details definitely ring true. Considering that firefighters are among the sexiest and hottest of America's heroes, that's a good thing. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more in this series.
