Book Description

July 1, 1998
Today more than ever, American families are scattered to the wind. Yet perhaps for this very reason, families have also been getting together for reunions in unprecedented numbers.

Planning a reunion is a pleasurable but complicated undertaking that requires foresight and planning, and here to assist is Family Reuinion, an indispensable guide and sourcebook that shows how to organize and conduct four basic reunions: a Backyard Barbecue for siblings and cousins, a Homecoming Weekend, an Extended Family Reunion, and a Family Camp, which typically lasts a week and gathers up to 100 participants.

Accessible and packed with ideas and information, the book shows how to create a workable timetable (18 months before a large reunion is not too soon to start planning), organize a committee, and set up a fund for expenses (and to help less-well-off members attend). There are chapters on location, including little-known church camps and family resorts; on scheduling activities for kids and adults, day and evening; on genealogy; on recording the event; and even on etiquette, including how to handle black sheep, in-laws, and stepchildren. With case studies of real-life reunions and duotone photographs throughout, this is the book that helps us connect.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Our families define us, and hence we feel the periodic need to reconnect even (or especially) with those most distant from us. This is no trivial undertaking, though, especially for a typically far-flung American clan. Help for the harried has arrived in the form of Family Reunion, a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to planning and staging a gathering to remember.

Author Jennifer Crichton knows what she's talking about, having helped organize her own 125-member reunion. Whether your family has hundreds of people or only a dozen, her advice is clear and always helpful. Topics covered include record keeping, choosing a site, entertaining kids of all ages, and etiquette ("Thou shalt orchestrate spontaneous praise unto the reunion organizer"), as well as the dynamics and logistics necessary when herding a large group of people. Peppered with examples from American families large and small, Family Reunion makes reunion organizing manageable, rewarding, and even fun. See you next year! --Rob Lightner

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for large group gatherings of any kind, October 29, 1999
This review is from: Family Reunion (Paperback)
I actually checked this book out at the library recently. I was looking for ideas for an activity at our church that needed to be for all ages and over 100 people. We were able to formulate ideas for an easy meal, activities, and a dance w/ music everyone could enjoy. I am anxious to use this book again for my family gatherings in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful at whatever stage of planning you may be!, August 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Family Reunion (Paperback)
Jennifer Crichton has put together an unbelievably helpful book. Whether one has come to the panic stage of time and planning or should the reader simply be considering a family reunion some time in the distant future this book is a must. This author and her resources have been there, done that! There seems a mother lode of helpful information on every page. The book is very well designed with annecdotal stories of various kinds of families and family gatherings interspersed with the conventional exposition of how things are best done. I found every one of her suggestions that I thought applicable to our reunion (and there were many) was received with great enthusiasm by everyone. If it is your first time planning a reunion or if you are looking for fresh ideas for ongoing reunions this is the book! Our family is going to pass this book on to each chairperson or host for future reunions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family Reunion, July 19, 2000
This review is from: Family Reunion (Paperback)
We teach genealogy classes and for a fun topic for the summer months, we gave a class on having family reunions and/or how a reunion can help you with your genealogical research. This book was a must have. Jennifer did a great job in putting together many ideas in planning various types of reunions from a picnic to a week long camp and everything in between. Thanks for a great tool that we will pass on to all the branches of our families.
