Book Description

September 25, 2007
Karim Spencer, raised in the home of a bootlegger in a run-down neighborhood, has gone on to become a successful businessman with a tony home, a beautiful girlfriend, and a son. But memories of tragedy and betrayal have kept him entrenched in the past, as have the living reminders of his former life, including his down-on-her-luck sister, Nadiah; JaQuan, Nadiah’s thugged-out teenage son; and Karim’s older brother, Omar, serving a life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit.

As emotions reach a boiling point, does Karim have what it takes to set JaQuan on a straight path, clear his brother of a bogus indictment without jeopardizing his own future, and hold together the family that he so desperately loves?

As Travis Hunter skillfully draws us in with strong, believable characters with endearing flaws and broken dreams, A Family Sin, full of riveting twists and turns of plot, unravels the mystery of a long-buried secret that threatens to tear a family apart.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The clunky latest from Atlanta-based Hunter offers a look at black urban life complicated by a slew of conflicts. The novel centers on Karim, who has escaped family tragedy and the temptations of the street to become a successful Atlanta businessman. Now he sees his nephew JaQuan headed for trouble, but is hesitant to help him for fear of bringing danger to his family. He's also grappling with the burden of being the family's straight arrow, surrounded by a stripper sister, a grandmother who sells liquor on her back porch and a convict brother. Hunter plagues his characters with obstacles, but the resolutions are too pat (or, in one case involving Random House saving the day, too hokey) and the prose is little more than serviceable.

More About the Author

I was born Florence, South Carolina. I grew up playing football and basketball like most of the other kids around my way. I never thought I'd be an author. I always hated reading and God forbid writing. So being the smart woman that she is, my mother used reading as a form of punishment for me when I acted up. Little did I know she was planting a very important seed. One that would one day turn into a career. I decided to start writing because I couldn't find any good books with positive African American male leads. So I decided to take a leap of faith and wrote my first novel, The Hearts of Men. I self published THOM and after selling a little over six thousand copies in about two months, I was approached by Random House. They republished The Hearts of Men. After that, I was bitten by the writing bug and now I'm on a role. Married But Still Looking, Trouble Man, A One Woman Man, Something to Die For, A Family Sin, Dark Child and the latest, Momma's a Virgin. I have three young adult novels; Two The Hard Way, At the Cross Roads, On the Come Up and the forthcoming novel about bullies; The Last Laugh. My novels are all quick reads. I could kill lots of trees with pages and pages of fluff but I prefer to give you mostly the meat and potatoes of the story. Im very passionate about my non-profit THe Hearts of Men Foundation. (www.theheartsofmen.org) Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Family is Family Through Thick and Thin, September 24, 2007
This review is from: A Family Sin: A Novel (Paperback)
A Family Sin by Travis Hunter is a book that explores the obligations that family members have for each other. Karim is a Financial Analyst with a live-in girlfriend and a son. He is doing everything he can to live a better life, but is constantly consumed with his family. His older brother, Omar, is in prison for life on a murder rap. His sister, Nadiah, is a beautiful girl who is always in love with the wrong man. She has one daughter she does not have custody of and a son, JaQuan on his way to trouble because he has anger issues about how he has been treated by the people in his life. Momma Mae is the grandmother who has taken care of her grandbabies, but has her own issues as the gun-toting, bootlegger in the hood.

I loved reading this book that is an old play on the biblical theme of 'the sins of the fathers always show up through the generations.' Mr. Hunter does a wonderful job of exploring family relationships, commitments and how so often parents are bound up in their own woes and are unable to help their children. Even with all the family sins and struggles it was beautiful to read how this family was always there for each other.

A Family Sin is recommended for all readers who enjoy a fast-paced, contemporary novel with a heartfelt message about how important family is. Great job Mr. Hunter.

Just to tell the true, but when he looks back on his family and the sins that they hold can the family be tester and turn there lifes around. This was a very good story how a grandmother can be there when our parents are not,and stand with the rest of the family we always have one that is stronger then the other.
