Book Description

0791441687 978-0791441688 May 27, 1999 First Edition
One of the most insightful and important contributions of the book lies in its well-articulated critique of the (simplistic) 'rentier state' theory, which attributes the resilience of Gulf regimes to their oil wealth and consequent ability to buy off the opposition. Such a critique is long overdue. The author's arguments and evidence to challenge the rentier theory should by themselves ensure that this book will receive much attention". -Guilain Denoeux, Colby College Michael Herb proposes a new paradigm for understanding politics in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. He critiques the theory of the rentier state and argues that we must put political institutions-and specifically monarchism-at the center of any explanation of Gulf politics. All in the Family provides a compelling and fresh analysis of the importance of monarchism in the region, and points out the crucial role of the ruling families in creating monarchal regimes. It addresses the issue of democratization in the Middle Eastern monarchies, arguing that the prospects for the gradual emergence of constitutional monarchy are better than is often thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent examination of the Middle Eastern-North African royal family, January 23, 2008

This review is from: All in the Family (Suny Series in Middle Eastern Studies) (Paperback)
First I must confess I am slightly biased. I took several classes with Dr. Herb but didn't get around to reading his book until 3 years after graduation. I wish I had read it sooner. Dr. Herb examines the idea of the royal family in the Middle East as a center of power with relatives occupying key positions in the government thereby consolidating power "in the family". The most notable is the al-Saud family in Saudi Arabia. A structure completely dependent upon and sometimes conflicted by familial ties. The monarchies are different in their examination because they depend on a constant bribing of society (the people) to stay in power, ward off threats, and increase their hold on society. As in his teachings Dr. Herb asks a constant question with each new piece of the puzzle: what does it mean. A great introspective examination and a fascinating read from a great teacher.
