4.0 out of 5 stars A classic text for intoduction to family therapy
This is one of the oldest and most classic family therapy text. Many experienced counselors have benefited from previous editions of the book. I read it several years ago, and I am also the co-translator of the Chinese edition of this book (4th ed.). It took us a LOT of time in the translation process. Because the language is full of jargons and the sentences are very...

1.0 out of 5 stars Rating is for the Kindle edition only
I was excited to try my first textbook on the Kindle. However, I regret the decision for two reasons. First, this book is not available for reading on Kindle for PC or Kindle for Iphone. I did not know I would not be able to read the book from all my Kindle locations. Second, several of the tables in the book are not visible, replaced by "Text not available due to...

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic text for intoduction to family therapy, December 23, 2000
This is one of the oldest and most classic family therapy text. Many experienced counselors have benefited from previous editions of the book. I read it several years ago, and I am also the co-translator of the Chinese edition of this book (4th ed.). It took us a LOT of time in the translation process. Because the language is full of jargons and the sentences are very long. It's a bit difficult for non-English speaking people. However, it has some good points. First, it has almost everything a biginner needs to know about family therapy. Second, it includes updated information. For example, it now has a single chapter on cultural diversity and ethnicity, which is an important topic in this field. And the popular theories like narrative and solution-focused therapies are also included. One weakness is that many old and less-used approaches occupied much space only for their historical importance. Besides, some information on the chapter of research does not catch up with latest trends. Overall, I think it is suitable for introductory family therapy courses, especially at the undergraduate level. But I think it could have more clinical examples to more clearly depict the theories.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rating is for the Kindle edition only, May 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was excited to try my first textbook on the Kindle. However, I regret the decision for two reasons. First, this book is not available for reading on Kindle for PC or Kindle for Iphone. I did not know I would not be able to read the book from all my Kindle locations. Second, several of the tables in the book are not visible, replaced by "Text not available due to copyright restrictions." These are tables integral to the text. Now I will have to borrow the book from a classmate or buy it to see the tables. I really had no idea that purchasing a Kindle edition of a book might entail buying a book with virtual pages torn out of it. Definitely diminishes my enthusiasm for Kindle overall.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy the Kindle version!!, April 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have a Kindle and enjoy saving a few bucks by purchasing the Kindle versions of books since I get them instantly and the price is a bit cheaper. I am running into a problem with my class because the electronic version of the book does not allow you to view about 90% of the images/figures/tables, etc. My professor specifically tests off some of these figures and I can't see them. I'm struggling in this class because of it, and it's too late for me to return the electronic version to buy the book version. Do NOT buy the Kindle edition!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Introduction to Family Therapy, October 10, 2002
As a student of Family Therapy I am keenly aware of the need to have first-class resources that utilize proven techniques and that are theoretically sound.

This text by the Goldenberg's, I have been told, is a veritable classic. I can see why. The book is very logical in its layout and construction, with the authors eschewing jargon and therapy-speak for clear, lucid, and cogent language.

I have come to learn that there is a world of difference between individual therapy, and family therapy. The Goldenberg's make sure that this vital distinction is clear to the reader, and they do so without pedantry.

I would recommend this book as a resource or as the primary text for any graduate level family therapy course. This book is so comprehensive that it can stand alone, or be used to supplement your studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem Amongst Psych Texts, February 6, 2006
Thus far this book has been easy to read and informative, detailing the incredibly useful theories and principles of Family Therapy.

This being my first text on the subject has kindled an interest in me to continue pusuing the subject in depth, and I recoomend this text as a canon text in the specialty of Introductory Family Therapy.

This review is from: Family Therapy: An Overview (Hardcover)
This book is comprehensive, informative, and well-written. Provides a good overview of family therapy theories and techniques. For family therapists interested in integrating play therapy into family sessions, the following books are essential:

Play in Family Therapy

Creative Interventions for Troubled Children & Youth

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware of Kindle Edition!!!!, October 19, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The content of the book is a great tool for future Family Therapists. However, I would strongly recommend that students obtain the actual textbook. The kindle version excludes all tables, which are extremely essential to grasping the overal theories and models presented. Where the tables and/or boxes with additional academic should be, instead reads "Text not available due to copyright restrictions." This should have been clearly expressed prior to purchasing, as I for one would have spent the additional money to obtain the actual book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review, September 26, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Family Therapy: An Overview (Hardcover)
I purchased this book for a class and it came in excellent condition and was delivered in a timely manner. The text itself is very easy to follow, as well as very educational. With this text, I do not feel as if the author is just saying the same things over and over, I feel as if I am getting new information about the same topics that I will be able to apply to my career latter in life. This is a good read.

This review is from: Family Therapy: An Overview (Hardcover)
I needed to purchase this book as a textbook for a master's level psychology course. The book is well written, informative and covers many different types of family systems therapies. I intend to keep this on my professional bookshelf for future use.
