Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-6?A large, handsome format adorned with elegant, framed and unframed paintings distinguishes this collection of 52 of the more familiar Bible stories. Based on the Douay Bible and well translated, the writing is smooth, interesting, and colloquial, using short, lively sentences. The stories themselves, however, are condensed to just a few paragraphs, and the subjects for inclusion are very selective. The Old Testament portion highlights the Creation, the flood, Cain and Abel, Joseph, Abraham, and other standard favorites. The New Testament section presents a well-integrated narrative of Jesus's life, including some of the miracles and teachings, with brief selections from Acts and Revelation at the end. An interesting comparative chronological table showing Biblical events and general history is included. The artwork, with its slender, expressive figures; glowing colors; and beautiful, decorative composition, is a perfect complement to the text. Many other Bible story collections are also selective, such as Tomie dePaola's Book of Bible Stories (Putnam, 1990) and Sandol Stoddard's A Child's First Bible (Dial, 1991), while the old Sunday School standbys such as Egermeier's Bible Story Book (Warner, 1969) and Hurlbut's Story of the Bible (Zondervan, 1967) are far more detailed and comprehensive.?Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA

5.0 out of 5 stars ...exceptional, beautiful..., January 1, 2001

As a homeschooling mother of six I am always looking for ways to learn as a family. This gorgeous book, based on the old Douay Bible (most reliable translation), has 52 very manageable stories that walk the family through the whole Bible. The translation is extremely accurate and easy to understand for all. What a special way to keep "holy the Sabbath!" Once a week on Sunday evenings Dad reads Bible stories to the family from God's Book. In one year (52 weeks) we will have the joy of knowing we have given our children a precious gift... treasure in heaven. We hope to repeat this every year till they leave and pass this tradition onto their own children. Honestly, the illustrations are exquisite. This will become a cherished family heirloom. I am forever grateful to the author and illustrator. May God bless them for their efforts.

this item was in excellent condition, EXCEPT that it came with a significant bend in the cover. it had been folded over as it was put into the envelope to mail it. this didn't bother me, as it was for us and not a gift. but it was not in the condition stated.
