4.0 out of 5 stars A well evolved product February 6, 2006
I'd have to disagree with the negative review that claims anything you can do with this can be done with a Word Processor. That suggests the reviewer hasn't had much experience with genealogy software. Comparing a sophisticated and highly specialized database program built on years of profesional genealogy database usage to a simple word processor is like saying that you can do anything you could do with a helicopter with a bicycle.

GEDcom imports and handling other file formats are essential for genealogy software so that researchers can collaborate. It's how we communicate with other researchers to add whole family branches and trees. This software builds around that essential feature to add timelines, mapping and many flexible ways to report on all, or sub-sets, of the data you collect. The online integration seems to have finally evolved to a point where the software can be the focal point for research instead of data CDs, Web browsing and juggling books.

Note the reality that the majority of genealogy research CDs can are made in a format that can only be opened by this program or a related free reader version of it, and the that FTM is a much more commonly used program than any other, which makes it easier to exchange data.

I'd recommend reading the other reviews of other versions of this software as they are all essentially the same, with the Deluxe version adding more online subscriptions, and the basic not including a training video or as much time free online at the related Ancestry.com site. Be aware that premium access to that site does cost extra for access to all databases. But I've spent hundreds of dollars on Data CDs over the years and can appreciate that they don't give that all away for a free or low monthly subscription.

2.0 out of 5 stars Many great features, but it has bugs June 4, 2006
I upgraded to Family Tree Maker 2006 some months ago, but about two months ago, I ran into a problem when creating "Descendant Tree - Standard" in "Book Layout." I get the error message: "You have selected a combination of styles or items to include that do not allow a paginated tree to be formatted properly." I can still do the non-paginated (custom) version of the decendant tree, but that's not workable for printing in a Book.

I called tech support and they spent quite some time with me; the tech stepped me through and checked everything possible and verified that there were absolutely no settings I had done that should create this problem. He even had me email a gedcom of my file to him (a much smaller version of the file since the Book and the images are no longer there) and the problem still existed, for me and for him.

He acknowledged this was a bug and said he would submit my file and the problem to their tech people, but essentially he told me not to hold my breath on a solution. Just great! I've spent hundreds of hours creating my file and Book.

I did find I could get around this problem by using "Hourglass Tree - Standard" instead, however, it takes forever to generate a large tree.

Now I'm getting an error on creating an Outline Descendant report. This one says "You have selected a combination of styles that are too large for this page size. Some information may not print. Family Tree Maker will fit as much as possible by adjusting the indentation and font size." Baloney! I've run this report in the past and went back to the earliest generation (13) and had no problem.

Now I can only display two generations and then I get this message. As soon as I go to the 3rd generation, I get the error message.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of two best genealogy programs February 21, 2006
This is a very good software program. The only other program that comes close is Legacy Software. The improvements in the 2005 and 2006 releases are very helpful, including easier interaction with the web and websites. The software is heavy with advanced items, but still fairly basic for people who are just starting and don't want to get bogged down in the heavier, advanced capabilities. I especially like the connection to Ancestry.com (can cost up to $20 per month). This package gives you free use of their HUGE database for 6 months. That makes the software almost free. The low review must be by a disgruntled ex-employee or a newbie to genealogy. His comments are WAY OFF BASE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Family Tree Maker Standard July 10, 2006
I found the program software very helpful in organizing information about ancestors. It is not clear what the 180 days free access buys you. At first it was frustrating to see all the locked records. However, after I had signed up for the free 14 day trial, I was amazed at the information available online. After having dabbled in writing down my ancestors from personal interviews with grandparents, this program helped me advance in the knowledge of our ancestros by several generations in a few days. This can be addicting.
