From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3 Vivid memories and vivid colors enliven the story of a young girl on her first long family vacation. Vignette paintings filled with flat colors and staccato patterns evoke the 1950s setting. May, her parents, and her older brother (the one who always wins) set out for a winter vacation in Florida. May is both frightened and excited by the adventure. Khalsa captures this and the delight that a child can take in the smallest details of a new experience. May starts a souvenir collection, coveting motel soap, sugar packs, and postcards. There are also the car games and an undercurrent of sibling rivalry that carry the story along. Khalsa's colors blaze like the southern sun with hot pinks and greens. She packs her pictures with detail. From sightseeing excursions to Parrot Jungle, penny arcades, and miniature golf courses, readers will relish May's experiences and enjoy remembering her family vacation.
