A thoroughly updated and expanded new edition of the bestseller, Family Violence Across the Lifespan, Second Edition helps students achieve a deeper understanding of the methodology, etiology, prevalence, treatment, and prevention of family violence. Research from experts in the fields of psychology, sociology, criminology, and social welfare is woven together to provide broad coverage of current viewpoints and debates within the field of domestic violence study. Practice and policy considerations provide new and welcome perspectives, and in addition, informal interviews with leading authorities in the field of violence add depth and clarity to the topics. Organized chronologically, chapters cover child physical, sexual, and emotional abuse; courtship violence and date rape; spouse abuse, battered women, and batterers; and elder abuse.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I think that the authors do a tremendous job of integrating findings from a very large body of research and present their analysis in a reader-friendly way. The text is particularly strong in orienting the reader to the research issues, including the current state of knowledge in the area... I have found the text to be very well done and extremely useful in providing students with an introduction to the very broad field of family violence. I have recommended the text to colleagues and students. I applaud the authors for this work and thank them for creating such a comprehensive text." (Diane Hiebert-Murphy )

"This book includes an impressive overview of different types of violence and organizes a large amount of research material to make it accessible to the upper-level undergraduate.  Students will easily follow the organization of topics, themes and questions, and long chapters include several intermediary summaries, which is good.” (Jean Giles-Sims )

"With noteworthy reliance on a myriad of behavioral science sources, Barnett et al. explore the following: research methodology, assessment, and theories; child physical and sexual abuse; child neglect and psychological maltreatment; key issues in child maltreatment; dating violence, stalking, and sexual assault; intimate partner violence; and abuse of older adults and people with disabilities. There are appendixes for resources and violence incidence estimates. The quality of this book makes it potentially useful for undergraduate and graduate courses in all of the mental health disciplines. Those who are already working in domestic violence will be familiar with much of the substance, but the material is up to date and should help the experienced practitioner gain cutting-edge knowledge and refine skills." (John T. Firsching, Ph.D. PsycCRITIQUES )

This review is from: Family Violence Across the Lifespan: An Introduction (Paperback)
This is a textbook that I need for one of my course for a degree that I am reading in Child and Family Studies. Unlike many other textbooks, this book is worth reading. It is full of very current and updated information and covers a broad spectrum of family violence. A good buy indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars DV Book for School, January 8, 2012

The book was very cumbersome and bulky. It did provide detailed and historical information into the family violence. It's very scary to read some of the information but this is stuff that people don't talk about and have their feelings bottled up! We had this book for our domestic violence class. If you are into knowing things I would recommend that you read this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Displeased, January 5, 2012

Although I am only into the second chapter of this textbook, I have been quite disappointed and distracted by the way it has been written and edited. I have to admit I am a stickler for grammar and word usage, but the convoluted/inappropriate wordage, errors, and tense changes would make it difficult for anyone to read. Chocked full of information so far and there are paragraphs that do flow coherently. Unfortunately, I become so distracted trying to figure out what they actually meant to say at times, that I was tempted to underline the errors instead of paying attention to the main points.
