One of my goals entering into 2014 is to be a better steward and leader of my family. As someone who is gifted by the Holy Spirit as a pastor-teacher, the major disqualifying factor for me has been in the area of managing my household well (1 Timothy 3:4-5). Just as Paul says in this passage, if I can’t lead my own family well in worship, how can I think that I’ll be able to lead the people of God? It was with this in view that I happened upon Joel Beeke’s small book titled Family Worship (via Reformation Heritage Books).

In Family Worship Beeke offers his constructive thoughts on the biblical importance for family worship, as well as providing practical application for how that can look for your family. Divided into five chapters, the book covers the following categories: 1) theological foundations of family worship, 2) the duty of family worship, 3) implementing family worship, 4) objections against family worship, and 5) motivations for family worship. The bulk of the books content is contained in the first three sections.

As someone who was already familiar with the concept of family worship, getting the biblical foundation served as a gentle reminder of the biblical reasons why this is such an important matter. In the opening page of the book Beeke states, “I believe one major reason for this failure [lack of church growth] is the lack of stress upon family worship.” With this as motivation, he goes on to show that God is our model and that families are modeled after the triune life & nature of God. Since we are created in the image of God, as families we ought to worship together because there is an integral relationship between family life and worship.

This is an excellent book. I'm rather young and am completely new to Family Worship, but this book made me see that I certainly could do it! Beeke goes into the foundations of family worship, the duty of family worship, and how to implement it. He then speaks on objections and motivations. I certainly encourage every head of household to read this book. Get it as a gift for a head of household, if you aren't one.
