More About the Author

As a seasoned actor, writer, and stand-up comedian, Paul Reiser continues to add to his list of accomplishments. In addition to co-creating and starring in the critically acclaimed NBC series, "Mad About You," which garnered him Emmy, Golden Globe, American Comedy Award and Screen Actors Guild nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, his successes also include his book Couplehood, which sold over two million copies and reached the number one spot on The New York Times bestseller list and Babyhood, his follow-up book which features his trademark humorous take on the adventures of being a first-time father, which also made The New York Times bestseller list.

In 2003 Paul made his theatrical debut in Woody Allen's "Writer's Block." The evening of one-act comedies marked Mr. Allen's first time out as a director for the stage.

Born and raised in New York City, Reiser went to college at the State University of New York at Binghamton where he majored in Music - Piano and Composition. (He co-wrote "The Final Frontier" the theme song from "Mad About You" with Grammy-winning producer Don Was).

Remembered for notable performances in films such as "Diner," "Bye, Bye Love," "The Marrying Man," "Aliens," "One Night at McCool's" and "Beverly Hills Cop" ("I" and "II"), Reiser more recently starred in two original movies for Showtime "Strange Relations," opposite Julie Walters, and Chazz Palminteri's "Men vs. Women," opposite Joe Mantegna and Christine Lahti.

In the fall of 2005, his film project, "The Thing About My Folks" - also his first original screenplay - was released in theaters. The release date for the DVD is February 14th, 2006. Starring along with Reiser is Peter Falk, Olympia Dukakis and Elizabeth Perkins.

I've been a Paul Reiser fan for years. I giggled my way through "Couplehood" I cried with laughter through "Babyhood" and couldn't wait to get my hands on "Parenthood"
When it finally arrived at my door today I put down what I was currently reading and dug right in. I have to say, I'm not certain my hopes were entirely met. That isn't to say it wasn't good, or funny. It absolutely was. But I think this book was much different from his was less about humor and more about thoughtful story telling. There seemed to be more nostalgia than laughs. Which, as I said, wasn't a bad thing, just not what I had come to expect from Mr. Reiser. This however, shouldn't have been a surprise. It's been a very long time since his last book came out. He's gone from a new parent to being midway into getting his youngest son out of school. I suppose it was time for the nostalgia to come in.
While I didn't find as many gut busting laugh out loud moments in this book, there were some, and what replaced those moments was something just as fine....something you can relate to no matter what stage of life you're in..the only requirement is that, at some point in your life, you've had a family.
The book illustrates the idea we've all held at some point, that familyhood, the process of being a family is a very delicate, complicated and flawed thing. That no matter how much you try to change the things you felt were wrong in your own family growing up, life will absolutely do all it can to thwart your plans and take your plans and throw them out the window, but that's okay too. It gives you the idea that familyhood isn't so much a destination as a journey, as worn as that sounds....that life is for the living, not the planning..and besides, we have no idea where we're going anyway.

There is a sense of closure reading this book. Mostly if you have read his other ones: couplehood/babyhood. Now that I have read familyhood, I now know what it means to have a family and the importance of keeping that family alive and supportive. Paul Reiser wrote about the highs and lows of falling in love and getting married — and the heartbreak and hilarity that comes with it. In Babyhood, he turned his sharply observant eye to the experiences of having a brand-new family. And now in Familyhood, Reiser shares his observations on parenting, marriage, and mid-life with the wit, warmth, and humor that he’s so well-known for. From the first experience of sending his two boys off to summer camp — the early feelings of gleeful freedom in an empty house, to realizing how empty the house actually was — to maneuvering the minefield of bad words learned at school, this hilarious new book captures the spirit of familyhood, the logical next frontier for Reiser’s trademark perspective on the universal truths of life, love, and relationships.

An amazing actor, he is also an amazing author. He literally gets right down to the nitty gritty of things that make you think what are YOU doing with your life? How is it? Are you making your quota? Are you helping out your family? When I was sitting there reading his book (so while reading his book, I went back and read his other books, just to be on top of things) I was actually revaluating my life! I was thinkng, where has my life gown too, what have I done personally to make my life a living example to my kids (if I ever have any)? He really makes you think about your own life and that what I love about him. His show MAD ABOUT YOU, made me think of my life as well. Good for you Paul Reiser!!

Yes, what a well timed book! I so enjoyed "Couplehood" from Reiser some 15 (or more) years ago, that I shared it with many of my friends, all of whom found it as hilarious as I did. In the midst of having my own babies at the time he published "Babyhood", I completely missed out on that one. I was THRILLED to see he went on to write Familyhood! Reiser is such a gifted writer and humorist, that I laughed out loud for much of the book. He writes with the same sarcastic humor I so enjoyed in Couplehood. So many of his stories and analogies hit home, as I now have a family of five. He shared personal, heart felt stories that reflect what most in his generation are going through: looking at our past through the eyes of our aging parents, and living our childhoods all over again through our own children's lives. While I laughed hysterically at his "Dr. Nutjob" story, I cried with happiness at the joy and fulfillment he experienced with his younger son at the beach. He is SO relatable that it felt like he was an old friend, drinking coffee in my kitchen updating me on his life.
I really, really enjoyed this book. I have been in a book club, who's job it seems, is to pick the most heart-wrenching and heavy stories lately. This book was a deeply needed breath of fresh air. I hope Reiser can find another vehicle to continue reaching out to his audience.

I have read the previous Reiser books and enjoyed the. I enjoyed this one too, just not as much as the others. Maybe it was just because he was trying too hard, within a limited time frame, to fill up a book of anecdotes that were all interesting.

This book covers his family's experiences with the kids in pre-teen ages. Stories rage from a lost cell pone, to trying to get a kid admitted to a very exclusive private school.

And this is one of the things that I like about Reiser's writing. He is able to tell a story about something that I can't really relate to (getting a kid into an exclusive private school) and still make me smile or laugh.

It was only with this book that I thought he took things that were very ordinary (the GPS story or the Luggage) and made them into exaggerated stories that were not funny.

But on the whole, the book made me smile. It was a quick read. A book that I took to the gym and read on the treadmill. I especially liked the honestly in the stories about his dog (and being part of the family) and (a hard subject to tackle in a book that is supposed to be funny) faith.

I have read his entire series, and will not doubt read further books that explore his experiences with life.... Just no more talking GPS please! :)
