Book Description

April 1, 2004
What happens when the richest nation on God's earth is driven to the outer limits of starvation? When the grain crop failed in Kansus it seemed like an isolated incident and no one took much notice. Except Ed Hardesty. Then the blight spread to California's fruit harvest, and from there, like wildfire, throughout the nation. Suddenly America woke up to the fact that her food supplies were almost wiped out. Her grain reserves lethally polluted. And Botulism was multiplying at a horrifying rate...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, with flawed execution, January 23, 2012
This review is from: Famine (Paperback)
The idea of the entire country's food supply becoming contaminated makes for a good story, and it's well-written by Masterton. This is an early Masterton work, and it's a precursor to his later armageddon-type novels where the entire U.S. is being subjected to some disaster such as being sucked underground ("Burial"), vampirism ("Manitou Blood"), or mass blindess ("Blind Panic").

The book's flaw is that it includes several unnecessary 1970s-style pornographic scenes, including one that reminded me way too much of "I Spit On Your Grave". Granted, the novel came out during the Harold Robbins era, but those scenes have not aged well. At some points I could have rolled my eyes and wondered when the pizza delivery boy was going to show up and join in.

Setting aside some laughable sex scenes, the novel is still a lot of fun and will make you wonder at times if the scenario described is possible, especially considering the threats this country faces now.

Interesting story on what would happen if we lost our food supply. The characters are mildly interesting as well as the premise of the book. Not his best but worth reading.
