I first found Tom Tierney's "Famous African American Paper Dolls" at an Afrocentric bookstore in Philadelphia. I love to buy paper dolls for my seven year old daughter, but this collection I held back for my college students (I teach anthropology). I was thrilled to have a collection of cut-outs of such wonderful and inspiring folks as Toni Morrison, Mary McLeod Bethune, Leontine Price and Zora Neale Hurston.
This morning I brought Tierney's book into my "Women at the Margins" course (translation: an anthropology class about gender, race, class and economic development). The dolls were used as supplemental with Black History Month. Famous persons reports were assigned at the fourth grade level.
