Thorough, concise, fair and entertaining, January 19, 2003

I watched this for a research project but enjoyed it thoroughly and can't recommend it highly enough. It was filmed many years ago but the quality is excellent. The information is presented in an entertaining manner with no boring moments and without talking down to the viewer. The video takes FDR through all 4 of his terms as president and fairly presents the views of his critics and advocates.

Want to know how a great president operates? Watch this tape, November 6, 2011
This review is from: Famous Americans: Story of Franklin Roosevelt [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The people that claim that Ronald Reagan was the greatest president of the twentieth century need to watch and absorb this history lesson about President Franklin Roosevelt. During his presidency he presided over the nation's response to two crises where the very survival of the United States was in question. Nothing Ronald Reagan did or had to deal with comes close to these crises.
The first was the Great Depression, a time of financial hardship that only those who live through it could understand. I am old enough that I have encountered many people that referred to themselves as a "Depression child" and they told me of their experiences. As bad as the economic situation has been the last four decades, it in no way measures to the hardship of the 1930's. There were occasions when troops were moved to locations out of fear of an armed uprising against the federal government over food and foreclosures.
The second was World War II, Roosevelt did all he could to move an isolationist nation to a war footing and intervene to aid Britain and China as much as possible within the strict restrictions set down by Congress. While Roosevelt did not live long enough to see the victories in Europe and Asia, he did live long enough to guarantee them.
Roosevelt also developed the greatest anti-poverty social programs ever developed in the United States, Social Security and unemployment insurance. As a close follower of the current body politic in the United States, I noted that many of the arguments mounted by Republican opponents of Roosevelt and his programs made in the 1930's are now being repeated and revisited in the 2010 and 2012 political seasons.
If you want to learn of Franklin Roosevelt, his political personality, successes and his critics, then this tape will provide an excellent overview.
