This review is from: Famous Authors Series: Samuel Johnson [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Were it not for James Boswell's account of their joint "Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland" (1775) and his subsequent monumental "Life of Samuel Johnson" (1791), we would know very little about the man often described as the major English literary figure of the latter half of the 18th Century. As it is, the biography focuses upon the mature Johnson that Boswell knew, a superb conversationalist whose witticisms remain a staple of books of quotations to this day.
This short film dutifully traces the geograhic course of Johnson's life and provides all of the basic chronological details, but does little to enhance the viewer's understanding of the man or his life's work. |
