Victor Hugo poet, novelist, and dramatist was one of the most important of the French Romantic writers. His deep involvement in politics is echoed in much of his work, which often advocates social justice and addresses many pressing concerns of his time. Though exiled partly out of pride for almost 20 years, he was considered a national hero and a living symbol of Republican French ideals. When he died in 1885, he was given a national funeral that was attended by more than 2 million mourners from all walks of life. In addition to novels such as Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, for which he is most famous, Hugo wrote nearly two dozen plays, and 18 collections of poetry. Considered by many as the greatest of all French poets, he wrote so passionately about so many facets of the human experience that Alfred Lord Tennyson dubbed him, "Lord of human tears"
