Gr. 4-8. Sawyers' collective biography introduces 30 Americans who either were born in Scotland or had some Scottish ancestors. A typical entry contains three or four pages of text and a full-page black-and-white reproduction of a painting or photograph of the person. Wide-ranging in their interests and professions, the individuals profiled include Elizabeth Arden, Neil Armstrong, David Byrne, Alexander Calder, Patrick Henry, Juliette Low, Herman Melville, Bill Monroe, Allan Pinkerton, and Jeanette Rankin. Although many of those profiled have been the subjects of individual biographies for young people, others have not. This concise, straightforward source of biographical information will become more useful if it is indexed in reference guides to collective biographies, as many of those profiled are not thought of primarily as Scottish Americans.
