About the Author

John Henry Haaren (1855-1916) was an American educator and historian. John Haaren studied under Prof. N. M. Butler at Columbia University, 1889-91, before becoming a teacher in New York. In 1907 he became Associate Superintendent of Schools in New York, increasing the number and efficiency of kindergartens and starting classes to teach English to foreigners. Haaren was president of the department of pedagogy in the Brooklyn Institute. Haaren High School (which was located on 10th Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets in Manhattan) was named in his honor. The Charles B. J. Snyder-designed school which was initially DeWitt Clinton High School is now Haaren Hall on the campus of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Haaren wrote a several history books which are still appreciated today, of which this is one. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This book has been great to read aloud to my 4th and 1st grader. They listen to me read while they color a related color sheet. It has helped us to keep the Roman rulers in order chronologically in order to understand an overview of Roman history. The format is a bit "boring" with small type and small black and white sketches for illustrations, but the content seems to be solid and does not overload the reader with too many details.

The content is great, but the formatting of this edition is pretty terrible. The type is tiny and faded, and the pictures are small and grainy. It makes me think someone put it together who didn't really know what they were doing, and then tried to save money on printing costs. I would recommend the edition from Greenleaf Press, as the main content is virtually identical and much easier to read.

I am giving 5 stars for content. This is an excellent resource and I am thrilled to have it as we study Ancient Rome. I just cannot understand why the type is so small and so faint. I feel kind of sick after reading it. Did I get a bunk copy or is this really the intended print????? It's a huge turn off!!!
