About the Author

I am a psychologist ,student counselor and career counselor with two boys aged 9 and 14. In noticing that my sons had different aptitudes and interests I became interested in where it may lead them with respect to their careers. At the same time, it was apparent in my work that many adults were unfulfilled, unhappy and under achieving because they were trapped in careers that didn't suit their particular blend of talents and interests. It is clear that we all have our individual mix of talents and interests and some people through luck or insight find the right career and maximise the probability of a joyful, fulfilling life while others miss the goal. Most career guidance tests are aimed at older people but I wanted one for the younger age group. I also wanted accurate projections of future trends for when the young person is entering the work force and a jobs dictionary to explain all the many varied possibilities in work life. It took over 3 years to produc! e it all and I thank the many students and their parents for the feedback I received along the way.

This is not a job search book but a self-knowledge book. It serves as a beacon, a channel marker which highlights two deep channels running through each of our lives called interests and talents and the jobs that can be found at that intersection which may best fulfill us as individuals. Even at the ages of 9 to 14 these talents and interests are there. Its not too early to think about the general direction of the young persons career, because career is based on education and educational choices are being made now. Motivation and direction can also be developed now and if the young person sees a real goal, based upon his own interests, it will provide the motivation and the desire to do the work necessary to succeed and increase his or her opportunities and options for the future.

I hope that you find this book useful as an initial guide and motivator to a happy and successful future for the young people in your life.

This review is from: The Famous Outrageous Cool Kid's Guide to the Future: the unique career guide for pre-teens and young teens based on their talents and interests (Paperback)
I bought my copies to use as a "giveaway" for my clients. These are the parents of children concerned about steering them in a direction appropriate to their talents and interests. I give the conventional tests including a brief job interest inventory, and a copy of Dr. Mark Edwards' book for the child to work through at home. I have only heard compliments from the parents - and children. The book isn't just useful, it is motivating and fun to use.
