What a shame this gem is out of print, December 26, 2009
This review is from: Famous Paintings: An Introduction to Art for Young People (Hardcover)
Like the previous reviewer I was given this book as a child and I perused it with absorption and pleasure over and over. The reproductions are excellent, the art is first rate, varied, and chosen to appeal to a child. The text is minimal but interesting and child friendly. I remember even liking the book's smell. I credit my present enjoyment of art and my well developed eye to this book as much as to any art class I've taken since and I look forward to sharing it with my grand daughter. I can still see Hogarth's Shrimp Girl, Marc's Red Horses, and Holbein's Prince Edward (seen on the cover) and many others as I saw them once upon a time through the eyes of a nine year old. I hope some publisher will decide to reissue this, perhaps with some new paintings to bring it up to date for the 21st century.

Every Child should learn art with this book!, January 12, 2009
This review is from: Famous Paintings: An Introduction to Art for Young People (Hardcover)
This book is a classic - a long, long time ago (when I was a child) I was introduced to art by memorizing the paintings in this book, and have never forgotten any of them. What a gift for a young person! A MUST!

An Extraordinarily Beautiful and Intelligent Introduction to Art for Children, June 19, 2011
This review is from: Famous Paintings: An Introduction to Art for Young People (Hardcover)
I received this book shortly after my fifth birthday at the age of five from my parents for Christmas in 1959. I personally credit this book with being a major influence in my development as an artist, and indeed, its influence was so profound that a select number of images first seen in that book--scenes from the ancient Assyrian Lion Hunts of Nineveh--resulted in a monumental work of mine, "The Killing of Lions; An Iraqi War Meditation", now in the collection of the Emir of Qatar. How many books on art published today for young people, I wonder, would include these underappreciated works of genius? I still have this magnificent book, worn and frayed through countless years of loving handling. I occasionally open it to marvel at the aesthetic vision that inspired its production and publication--and to return to a young-old place within myself that was first awakened by its pages, and deeply and continuously nourished for many years thereafter. I recommend this book to all parents who hope to awaken a similar place within the hearts and minds of their children.
