5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, March 10, 2006

This review is from: Fanaroff and Martin's Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine: Diseases of the Fetus and Infant, 2-Volume Set (Hardcover)
It is difficult to read, no doubt about that. However, it has a edge of giving the reader the required concept. Also it is unanimously known that the neonatology board questions contain a lot of questions, foundation of which are laid on the themes , well described in this book.
Definitely recommneded for any body really serious in neonatology. The latest chapter of bioethics and legal medicine is worth mentioning , as it has not been covered in any other neonatology text book.

2.0 out of 5 stars review of the kindle ebook version, August 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great book- no question about it. have used various editions of it over the years and it is all it is advertizd to be.

However the kindle version leaves much to be desired. I am not clear whether the problem is Kindles or thye publishers.

And here is the problem in a nutshell:
You read a 200 page textbook a little diferntly from how you would read a novel.
You start a novel on page 1 and read forward to the last page ( or not- if you lose interest).
a reference text book is read differently. You want tyo look up something. you browse the table of contents., or you look at the index. Generally you will find several options that appear to be what you are looking for. Then you go to the appropriate page numbers in some form of sequential manner untill you find what interests you. Sometime what you are lokking for is spread over sveral chapters. Bottom line is you navigate the book- how should I say -non linearly or non sequentially.

The kindle version of this great volume is simply not set up to do that.

There is no index
serach functon is terrible
chapters are long as in a hundred or more pages sometimes
chapters are not divided into subchapters
there is no way of skimming past 10, 20 30 or 40 pages at a time.

let me give two examples:
I wanted to look up something about Pulmonary hypoplasia
did a search
PH does not show up on search- and a kindle page is around 1/2 to 1/3 rd of a book page
so i had to go the cahpter on disorders of the rsp sysytem and basically go over it page by page untill i found the discussion i desired. - Painfull !

Next just today i needed to ref. something re MAS
got 30-40 serch terms with no guidance re what specifically the search was doing
so had to go through a laborious process again

got tired and returned the book

great idea- poor implementation

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book. A classic in neonatology., November 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This text book is a classic in the neonatology field. It is not easy to read. I wish they made it with a little bit of more color and more friendly to the reader. What is a plus in this edition is the online expertconsult that give you full access to the entire content of the book.
I personally like Avery's better than Fanaroff but since I started my fellowship this year and Fanaroff released this lates edition I thought that was going to be better than Avery's but I still prefer to read from Averys rather than from this new Fanaroff edition.
