Because I used these lamps, I endangered my actors and crew.

So I got the third light, plugged that in, and in under a minute, I smelled smoke, from the light housing, not the control pod this time.
David B. Haynie
I would say spend a little extra money and invest in some fresnel lights.

They say you get what you pay for, so I wasn't expecting too much from these lamps, but wow! These are so spectacularly bad they are a danger to have on your set. LOOK ELSEWHERE.

Lamp 1: Before I even started shooting, this lamp just shut off. I thought the bulb had blown, so I swapped it out with a spare, but no luck. I set it aside and put in the second head.

Lamp 2: Just finalizing the lighting setup when this, too, just shut off. Inspecting the lamp I saw that the internal wiring had … just come undone. The leads were simply pinched into clips, and not pinched very tightly. So when you adjust the spot/flood knob, they come undone. They just slip out of their clips. So with a jeweler's screwdriver and some needle-nose pliers, we did some emergency repairs.

Running behind schedule, we shot for about three and a half hours before:

Lamp 3: Just … melted. Turns out the cords are insulated with plain old, soft vinyl and the heat from the lamp's operation is enough to melt the insulation.

[...]

This lamp started arcing and spitting sparks all over my backdrop. You can year the pops on my audio track.

Because I used these lamps, I endangered my actors and crew. AVOID THESE LAMPS.

I read some previous negative posts, and despite some of the negative feedback I went ahead and purchased the product since you couldn't go too far off with the price.

I read one reviewer who said that the plastic parts of the light melted down. I think i have a newer version of the set where there are no plastic pieces. I purchased these since I needed some high power lighting for on site lighting of large spaces which I couldnt accomplish with my smaller studio setup. They throw alot of light as advertised 800w per light. They also will throw a respectable amount of heat as well. I did notice they do cool fairly quickly. Another important feature when time is money on setup and tear down.

I have two gripes with the product: 1)There doesn't appear to be any way to attach gels. However, since we are pretty close to run and gun type of shooting. We light it to be fairly flat and re-color in post with some pre-set filters in Premiere and/or After Effects. 2) I did notice an earlier reviewer who complained about the stands. I too believe these stands to pose a problem when fully extended.

I understand I'm buying affordable lights, as I've done many times before. I'm a freelancer on a budget like many of you currently looking at these, but I don't care how affordable a product is, it's useless if it doesn't work as advertised. I had all three bulbs blow out within the first ten minutes on set. One after the other. I didn't touch the bulbs with my skin, so I could think of no other reason than cheap manufacturing, which typically I can forgive. I attempted to contact the seller via their website a week ago in an effort to receive replacements, but still have had no response back. For the short amount of time they were on, the lights were bright and seemed like an excellent buy. Instead I was just embarrassed in front of clients while attempting to light a scene.

As I have said before, you get what you paid for. Although I have purchased a tripod from Fancier studio and turned out to be great, I can't say that about these lights. I pondered the purchase a few days before doing so. I read the reviews and seemed like it was worth a try. I should have listened to my gut. CHEAP!

I took one light out of the box and tested it. It has a great 800W illumination, but in about 5 minutes, it heats up so hot that the plastic and hardware begin to melt and smoke. Don't even think about trying to attach a gel to these lights. Will end up making plastic soup. Barn doors are about the strongest parts on the lights. The stands are so flimsy that they start bending under weight of the light at full extension.

The return process was a mess. Two calls to Amazon CS and one email to Fancierstudio over three days to get a reply. Yes the return says they have up to three days to reply, but it was not until 15 minutes after I complained to FS that they approved the return. They won't pay shipping, even though I was a PRIME customer. So $35.30 was the amount for UPS to deliver back the item, which is a large portion of the actual light cost. Will be the last product we buy from FS.

Botom line, good lighting costs money. I guess these lights would be a good cost effective tool for HS Film students.. at best. OR you can get a more durable rig from Home Depot for small projects at a lower cost. Good luck.

I hate to do this, but i have to. It could be just me the unlucky person, but this is my experience with it; I bought it for my events(wedding,Parties, etc...) After 2 uses the Light Bulbs fried, and the unit head fired as well. The stand was really poor as well, i had to buy different stands for it. The color temperature was pretty yellow(3200K) witch i knew when i purchased it. I bough Lowel Gel for it, but that turns the output of this light to almost half of its power. After all of this, i dint bother replacing the light bulbs cause i couldn't use it anyways, after this i used the barn doors on my garage lights that i think it does a better job with some DIY fixes. You pay for what you get for. Cheap = Long Term Expensive.
