I read the original Fancy Nancy book to my nieces, and, at the time, thought that the effect of Nancy stopping every other word to explain that "That's a fancy word for so-and-so" was a little annoying. Having now read several of the early readers, I can honestly say that it is MUCH less annoying when you're not the one reading the book aloud! My niece (who is six and entering the first grade in a week!) found this book easy enough to read with only a little help from me. Help largely consisted of asking her to sound out a word a second time, asking her if the sentence "makes sense" the way she read it, or asking if she's SURE she saw a d (or b, or w) in that word. There were a few words I had to read *for* her, but not more than I'd expect from this style of book. However, it should be noted that she was one of the better readers in her kindergarten class. I especially liked how obvious it was that Nancy felt a little left out and friendless, even before she said she felt "excluded". I will also note that there are an awful lot of sentences on each page. This is a good book for kids in the later stage of "beginning readers", I think, not in the very early stage.

Beautiful illustrations & creative vocabulary but questionable message,
This review is from: Fancy Nancy: Pajama Day (I Can Read Book 1) (Paperback)
As usual, the author does a beautiful job of illustrating and uses interesting vocabulary. However, the overt message of the importance of conformity is not what I personally wish to convey to my children. That being said, it does provide an opportunity to discuss peer pressure, conformity and uniqueness. There are several other Fancy Nancy books that do have it all...beautiful illustrations, flowery vocabulary and solid take home messages.

My daughter has had a hard time with reading and finding books she like are important. She loves the Fancy Nancy character (and resembles her in attitude a bit). This was a very cute book. My only complaint is that since Nancy always uses "fancy" words she has a tendency to get stuck while reading out loud. Overall good book, but be ready to help when the words get too "fancy"

My seven-year-old granddaughter loves Fancy Nancy books. This one is a particular favorite of hers. We both love the words and pictures. I like the way the author teaches children new words.

Purchased for my 4yr old granddaughter. She just loves the series of books and hangs on every world. Although it is geared towards older girls, she just gets a kick out of each story line.

Every young girl should read Fancy Nancy,
By Ginny Janning (T-Roy, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fancy Nancy: Pajama Day (I Can Read Book 1) (Paperback)
I love the Fancy Nancy series. Nancy exposes children to bigger words by alluding to the fact that they are "fancy". Nancy makes young girls speak in words that an average child may not use. Right off the bat, Nancy uses the word unison in Fancy Nancy Pajama Day. My four year old uses "fancy words" all the time now. The stories are always fun and the art by Robin Preiss Glasser is beautiful. In this particular book, your child will learn the wordsunison elegant dilemma unique reply excluded immature I love that in the back of the book, it will list the "fancy words" and their meanings so that when you are done reading the story to your child, you can go over the words again. Again, I really do love Fancy Nancy and hope that Jane O'Connor writes for a long time to come. I dont think you can get a better deal on a book that is both educational and fun at the same time. Hope you enjoy Nancy as much as we do!

Considering the speed with which Ms. O'Connor is churning out these "I Can Read" titles in addition to the regular Fancy Nancy titles, I have been worried that the quality will suffer. So far, however, that has not been the case. Though there are some of the books I like better than others, I continue to be excited about sharing these books with my own daughter, Nancy. In this story, there is a pajama day at school. When Nancy comes dressed in a fancy nightgown, she is "unique" but feels left out when her best friend, Bree, has matching pajamas with another classmate. Bree and Clara spend the day playing together as "twins" while Nancy is on her own. Needless to say, it all works out well in the end. O'Connor has become quite adept at teaching little lessons in these books in subtle ways, in addition to the reading skills and vocabulary. Though I would not consider most of these stories as entertaining as what you get in the "main" Fancy Nancy titles, they are well worth having on the shelf.

I bought this book and 2 other Fancy Nancy books for my 5 year old granddaughter. She reads them every night and loves them. I bought a Fancy Nancy doll land butterfly book for her birthday and I know she'll love them.
