Chaotic, Exuberant Fun,
By
This review is from: Fancy White Trash (Hardcover)
Two things happened to me when I read Fancy White Trash. First off, I was utterly charmed by Abby and her sincere determination to walk a life path in the opposite direction of her wayward sisters. The second thing was that by page two, I was captivated and on a rollercoaster of nonstop drama - some of it heartwarming, some of it heartbreaking and MUCH of it HILARIOUS. This book is packed tight with warmth and friendship and family, and at the core plays out the truths that you can't choose the family you're born into and you can't totally control life or love with a plan. Ultimately, the book did a great job of underlining a universal truth through a likeable character: The challenges you surmount and the power of the love and friendships that nurture you are the core of your strength and character.
Fancy White Trash is fast paced, funny and poignant. I definitely laughed out loud in several places. It's a great book!

The Rules for finding your One True Love, according to Abby Savage:
1.) Find Someone New 2.) No Baggage from Past Relationships Allowed 3.) Looks Aren't Everything 4.) Don't Need Him 5.) Get Out of Town. If this approach seems a little structured, a little overly cautious, you should know that Abby has a very good reason for inventing the rules - after all, she is one of `those Savage girls.' Abby learned everything she knows (or thinks she knows) about relationships and romance from making a study of soap operas and from watching the convoluted, doomed-to-failure flings and (very short term) commitments of her decidedly white trash mother and older sisters. She's determined to avoid the mistakes that led the elder three women in her house to teen pregnancies and an unbroken streak of failed marriages. Hence the One True Love plan The only problem is, Abby's first love (and first heartbreak), Jackson, has just reappeared on the scene. He's not new and there's definitely baggage. He claims he loves her, really loves her, but there are those rules. If Abby sticks to her plan, Jackson is out, whether he's her one true love or not.

I have not laughed out loud at a book in a long time. I have to admit, while I was browsing at the library, the title caught my attention. Once I began reading Fancy White Trash, I was sucked in and I found myself taking the book with me everywhere I went so that I could finish it. Haven't done that in a while either.
Visit the author's site [....]. I hadn't really thought of the book as a young adult book, but it is and is a great read for teens. Abby Savage comes from a less than stellar background. It's the total opposite of the luxury and status represented in the soap operas that she is addicted to. Fancy White Trash is Abby's account of how she deals with the love triangle between her mother, her mother's husband, and her sister and her best friend Cody as he makes a discovery of his own. Abby is determined not to become "One of those Savage girls" and lives by her One True Love Plan, but she soon finds that plans are made to be broken. This book earns 5 stars from me, something I haven't done in a while! Great read! This has been straight from Mrs T's POV.' [....]

I cracked up, outloud, throughout this book. Abby is adorable and she finds a way to *try* to stay normal while being related to all the crazies. I loved trying to figure out, Jerry Springer style, how a man can be a father and grandfather to the same child. It's very cleverly written. I have recommended it to my coworkers but not so sure I want my 14 year old neice reading it yet, since there is a lot of sex talk. Highly recommend.

A good, enjoyable read,
This review is from: Fancy White Trash (Hardcover)
I think my title summed this story up: A good enjoyable read. It captured me from the beginning and I could easily relate to the main character. Her life was a complete soap opera (but sometimes could get a little overused, since she was always talking about soap operas). That and lack of a plot were the only downsides to this story. Its not a book that's changed my life or is gonna stick with me forever, but I did enjoy it while reading it. It deals with all kinds of relationship, both homo and hetero (lol) and you'll feel heart warmed when it ends. Aside from the dramatics and crazy arguments, It does shine some light on the "fancy white trash" kind of living. I'm related to that kinds of family, so I was able to relate. In fact, I'm seeing them tomorrow (ugh, way to ruin my Christmas day). Since I know what it's like, I just felt I had to say, it's rare to have a family like the Savages. No one's really like that, though I'm sure there are some special cases out there, most was over dramatized. Transitioning back to the story, fun, easy read that I was able to finish from about 10 PM to 4AM, lol. Yeah, it was good! I recommend reading it.

Abby Savage lives in a family with beaucoup complications. That's why she created her One True Love Plan modeled after the "dos" and "don'ts" she's learned from watching soap operas.
Then Abby's first love, Jackson, shows up again in her life and threatens to make her break her own rules. Marjetta Geerling's debut novel features a cast of unforgettable characters that will make you laugh out loud. -- Reviewed by Michelle Delisle

FANCY WHITE TRASH is positively marvelous. Through well-developed characters, Geerling captures real, palpable, and wholly relatable teen and family situations. I would give a plot summary for this book, but you simply do not need it.
I am always apprehensive about reading new YA literature, but when I took a Look Inside FANCY WHITE TRASH, I knew I would be in for pure enjoyment. Each page is littered with humor and wit, and the narration is strong and convincing. I found myself smiling at the characters' comments; Abby, in particular, always made me laugh, and she never failed to inspire other emotions in me, too. By the time I finished the novel, I felt a personal connection to many of the characters. This is exactly how I know Geerling has created a fantastic read. If you pass this up, you have made a dreadful mistake.

Marjetta Geerling Creates the Kind of Trash You NEVER Want to Throw Out!!,
By SD64 "classified" (Miami) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fancy White Trash (Hardcover)
Fancy White Trash is the kind of novel that has it all: Endearing characters, hilarious situations, and a subtle message that sometimes, you have to let go of the rules and follow your heart. The soap opera antics of 15 year-old protagonist Abby Savage's life may at first glance appear to be outlandish and strictly for comedic value, but underneath that layer, it is truly a microcosm of the stress, frustrations, resentments, and support of familial relationships, which everyone can relate to on some level. The novel also explores the bonds of friendship, and subplots involving harrassment at school experienced by Abby's best friend, Cody, a closeted gay youth, ring true, and touch upon serious issues faced by many teenagers today. For those who need to make unneccesary comparisons to Meg Cabot, I say poppycock! If I want to read a Meg Cabot book I will. Ms. Geerling brings an fresh voice which is very welcome and enjoyable, and not just another clone of Cabot's. Had the author merely copied Cabot's style, then she would have been accused of that, too, creating a no-win situation. Anyone who has an open mind and is capable of embracing works from a variety of authors will adore this book! The characters are amazing, the story is romantic and funny, and I for one am PRAYING there is a sequel where we can embark on these characters' new journies! A+++++!
