Butterflies

The Great Egg-fly, which flies over 1,400 miles over water from Australia to New Zealand. The prism-winged Blue Morphos, believed by some Amazon tribes to be bits of fallen sky. The African Giant Swallowtail, with a 12-inch wingspan, and the fingernail sized Pygmy Blue. Bringing the fascinating world of butterflies to your fingertips, FANDEX presents a field guide to 50 of these vibrant and graceful creatures. Each entry features a die-cut, full-color image that makes identification simple and conclusive, plus additional photographs of the insects, often as caterpillars and pupae. Lively text covers life cycle, diet, habitat, gender variations, and the secrets of butterfly survival: camouflage, poison, and mimicry.

Book Description

A favorite subject of kids, nature lovers, scientists, and collectors, Butterflies takes full advantage of Fandex's unique full-color die-cut format to celebrate 50 butterfly species, from the enormous Queen Alexandra Birdwing, with its 11-inch wingspan, to the Blue Morpho, whose stunning metallic-blue color is caused by tiny prisms in its wings. Each entry includes the Latin name, range, plants used for laying eggs and drinking nectar, migration and mating habits, and how to recognize the species in its caterpillar, pupa, and adult stages. Includes 50 die-cut cards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, fun and educational guide to butterflies of the world, August 25, 2009
This review is from: Fandex Family Field Guides: Butterflies of the World (Misc. Supplies)
My preschooler loves butterflies and so do we [hubby and I]. On a recent visit to D.C., I saw this at the Smithsonian Natural History museum store, and fell in love with it! When I read this to my daughter, she loved looking at the full-color photographs of the butterflies [it's in a fandex format, so one can basically flip to any butterfly that catches one's fancy], and loved listening to the interesting facts about the different butterflies. For example, all three of us were startled to discover that many butterflies are poisonous, and the Swallowtail butterfly is particularly toxic! I was pleased to discover that the glorious Rajah Brooke was included [having grown up in Malaysia wch is it's native habitat], and we delighted in the unusual names given to some butterflies like "Dogface", "Ghost Brimstone" "Painted Lady", etc. There is much to delight in and fascinate in this superb collection of butterflies in a book [?]/fan and I would highly recommend it to all who love butterflies, both young and old [especially the young, as the visual beauty of the pictures and the fun fandex format will cultivate a love of nature in them].

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool, March 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fandex Family Field Guides: Butterflies of the World (Misc. Supplies)
I ordered this for my 3 year old niece that is infatuated with butterflies. The picture of the real butterfly is on the end of the card so she can compare it to what is flying around. As she gets older she will be able to read what the card says along with visualize the butterfly. Great color!
