My tastes (just so you know where I'm coming from since this is the first review)run towards the neo/symphonic prog genre that could include IQ, Pendragon, Transatlantic (excluding the Whirlwind monstrosity and rip-off), and Mystery -- and certainly scores of others I haven't had the pleasure of discovering yet or of properly categorizing. My favorite groups all have strong, soaring mellotronish keyboard passages. Martin Orford's work with IQ is my favorite more recent example. Yes's And You and I and Genesis's Firth of Fifth are perhaps the most defining songs in the genre, according to my tastes. Good symphonic prog songs should inspire, be dramatic, have complex arrangments, feature solos from most of the instruments, and finish in such fashion that the listener is left with goosebumps. The songs should get better each time, even after dozens of spins. Longer songs are usually the norm but not essential. What I do feel is most important is a reasonably tight song structure and an album that flows well. If Flower Kings had that, for example, that fine band would be in the IQ and Pendragon class, in my opinion. With all that being said, Fanfare and Fantasy is simply the best prog CD I have heard in a very long time. I can't do this beautiful music justice with my amateurish review. I have played the CD for three days straight and it still gets better. Not a weak song. Four that are among the best I have heard in symphonic prog from any era. A virtuostic masterpiece.

This is simply the most amazing album I've heard in a very long time. From what I've been able to glean from the lyrics and the album notes, it's about the loss of a loved one and it resonated in me in a very needed way. It, in just a few days, has become one of my desert island necessities ... if you could only take five albums! I have listened to it non-stop and there is simply not a single note on the album that isn't pure genius. It is most likely the most perfect production I've ever heard as well. If you are thinking about purchasing this album - do it! Don't think about it - do it! My most humble thanks to the brilliant musicians for this production which will live in my heart for the rest of my life ... and blessings to Jim Johnston for a masterpiece that I will celebrate forever.

This is by far one of the best prog rock albums I have heard in a long time. The one before this that really got me going was Arena's Seventh Degree of Separation which came out a few years ago. This album starts strong and finishes even stronger. The drums are tight and very technical. The guitar solos are melodic and at times just insane, also very tight. Keyboard just perfectly filling in and sometimes you can hear Clive Nolan's signature. I have no problem with the singing since I really like the lead singers voice. It is rare to find very highly trained singers in the Prog Rock world. Plus, to me it is more about the lyrics and music as long as the singer does not stink bad!
All and all, this is a great album and is worth every penny.

I shall be brief. I love the music, composition and musicianship. The production is stellar. The only thing that makes me stop from loving this is the vocals. Not a bad singer just extremely average. There is little inflection. I'm in the Hogarth and Gabriel camp. There is so much good prog out there with singers that are extremely average. I would love to hear a Hogarth behind this powerful music.
