something is missing in the world of salsa, and it is the great hector lavoe. it is a shame that many artists of today if not all of them do not use the imagination and creativity that was used in the 60's and 70's and they prefer to be recognised by a market that does not deserve to be indulged with the salsa rithms. instead they seek personal fame and fortune and...

3.0 out of 5 stars "The voice, that was LAVOE"
"... I will be with my people, until they take me against my will, until they take me to my tomb" these words came true on June 29, 1993.
A proud Jibarito (Puerto Rican, native) he always kept his latin roots alive through his music, lyrics and they will stay alive for as long as we remember -

5.0 out of 5 stars El Cantante de los Cantantes, April 30, 1999

"El Cantante de los Cantantes". This phrase says everything from the one and only, Hector Lavoe, from Ponce, Puerto Rico. On May 1st, Puerto Rico is celebrating a concert in memory of him, and it was incredible. Every fan of Hector Lavoe must recognize that the phrase described above is the best description of him. Que Viva Hector Lavoe, la Salsa y Puerto Rico!

What can you say about a country boy who grew up to be the best salsero the world has ever heard. His ability to sing salsa and romantic music is by far the best music in the 70's. I would highly recommend you buy everything he's ever made because it's timeless. Listen to Mi Gente on this CD and you'll see how passionate he was about being Puerto Rican. Que viva la music.

I'm not Puerto-Rican, I don't speak spanish, but I love those songs and this is one of my most treasured CDs in my latin collection. We've listened to it countlessly at home, for parties, I play it on the commute when I am tired, or as my wife say ``it's great moving music'' (during packing and moving). Or simply as a treat to sit down at the end of a long day and watch the sun set nursing a drink. It's got such energy and yet it just keeps flowing smoothly, with occasional jibes and dialogue by Hector and band. It's great stuff really. Moreover this is one of his best recordings, and there aren't that many of his still widely available (at least not while I was shopping for this item). Do yourself a favor and get it, if you so much as would like to have a salsa CD in your collection. You'll keep this one among your favorites long after you've explored the genre inside-out.
