Biography

Puerto Rican salsa singer Héctor Lavoe joined Willie Colón's band in 1967 and helped them become one of the best salsa bands around. The 1971 album they recorded together, Asalto Navideño, is a classic of the genre. But the chemical vices of fame took their toll on the working relationship, and before long Lavoe and Colón went their separate ways. Lavoe toured and recorded with the Fania All-Stars… Read more in Amazon's Hector Lavoe Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent anthology from this master sonero., November 17, 2003

This can be viewed as a continuation of Vol. 1. This double-CD package is incredibly similar in design and formatting to its predecessor and has many great songs. The fact that the first volume was released shortly before and this one just a little over a year after Hector's tragic death reeks of exploitation but it's nonetheless good that he does have these two excellent collections available. Hector was truly a great salsa sonero and has left us an incredible musical legacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a gorgeous as V1 - Music for your soul, August 9, 2005

My very first thought when i played this CD was one of slight disappointment. Volume one was so incredible on the first listen and absolutely blew me away. This was the style of salsa that i had been looking for and the thrill of finding a double CD of brilliant tracks was overwhelming at the time (I still love volume 1 and listen to it alot).

But then i soon realised that this double CD is just as magical and the lack of an initial thrill was more due to me being (now) familiar with hector's style than anything lacking musically.

As the other reviewer mentioned, you can consider this release to be disk 3 & 4 of the first set. Once again listening to this CD is incredibily rewarding. The way Hector and his musicians can make music that is both amazing complex and yet subtle at the same time never cease to amaze, even after many listens.

The music on both Vol 1 and Vol 2 just doesnt seem to age. Hard to believe that they are more than 10 years old.

You are once again taken on a musical journey through salsa. There is plenty of diversity on this CD and is absolutely worth buying if you like to dance or listen to cuban style salsa - gorgeous stuff - music and movement for your spirit and soul.

If you liked Vol 1 then you will love this CD as well.

Hector's untimely death is a great loss to all lovers of salsa. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
