Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This updated version of the 1957 edition incorporates innovations in technology and changes in Americans' attitudes toward foodAresulting in a fresher, healthier take on the original. Ages 10-up. (Apr.)n

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-Fannie Farmer has come a long way from the creamed eggs and stewed vegetables of yore. As Scobey writes in the introduction, "The world of food has changed dramatically...." There are new tools, products, and attitudes; there is more interest in international cooking and more attention being paid to health. What's left of the original book's approach is the good description of basic principles and recipes. "Cooking know-how" includes a helpful discussion of ingredients (including amounts of meat and fish recommended per serving), tools that may or may not be needed, terms that may be misunderstood by beginners, handy tips, and safety pointers. All are clear and to the point; the author understands that readers want to get to the preparations as soon as possible. The 119 recipes and their variations are all made from scratch, and are healthy without being extreme. Microwave instructions are given not as a way of life, but as a possible contribution to the goodness of the dish being prepared. Patience Brewster's pen-and-ink drawings are a pleasant addition. Sara and Zachary Williamson's Kids Cook! (Williamson, 1992) is a comparable, current cookbook for this age group. It's more folksy and fun, but not as basic and comprehensive as this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Fannie Farmer Junior Cookbook, August 25, 2000

This review is from: The Fannie Farmer Junior Cookbook (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my 8.5 year old daughter who has enjoyed cooking at my side and has an interest in learning to cook. This cookbook provides a wonderful introduction to the world of culinary arts, beginning with an understanding of basic food ingredients, cooking and baking tools and terms and continues with advise on safety and menu planning.

The level is probably best suited to children from 10 - 14, however, with some guidance and supervision my 8 year old can prepare most of the recipes.

Recipes include all the basics from Vegetable soup to Chili to Banana Nut Bread, Brownies, Pies and Punch. All recipes inlcude an equipment list along with the ingredient list and clear, easy to follow step-by-step instructions with important safety tips like "wearing oven mits, remove the cookie sheet from the oven."

We've tried several of the recipes and have not been disappointed. This junior version of the classic compares well. I expect that my daughter will one day take this cookbook off to college.

I bought this book out of college because I couldn't cook worth a flip. It's a great beginner's book - it takes nothing for granted! Later, when I married, I showed it to my husband and he began to take an interest in cooking because the book made it so easy. This is a very helpful beginner's cookbook, for any age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful to look at with delicious and easy recipes, December 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Fannie Farmer Junior Cookbook (Paperback)
Just purchased the New Fanny Farmer Junior Cookbook here on Amazon for an amazing price of less than $3.00- It is fabulous! Not only is it hardcover and absolutely beautiful, but all the recipes are great- I got a second copy to give to my 19 year old who is just setting up house- Has some of the same recipes from the 1965 edition, but mostly it is all new up-to-date delicious eating. Lots of meat dishes, main dishes, vegetables and basic great desserts and beverages. The perfect cookbook for someone just starting out, or for someone like me- loves to bake and cook, but only simple economical real-food recipes that my whole family will eat- this is it! If you still enjoy old-school cooking like white sauces, tuna casseroles, etc (made with milk not cream so it can be reasonably healthy) then it is still worthwhile to get the 1965 edition also- for less than $3.00 each why not?
