The Fannie Farmer Junior Cookbook,
By Ann Leyva (Yorba Linda, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Fannie Farmer Junior Cookbook (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my 8.5 year old daughter who has enjoyed cooking at my side and has an interest in learning to cook. This cookbook provides a wonderful introduction to the world of culinary arts, beginning with an understanding of basic food ingredients, cooking and baking tools and terms and continues with advise on safety and menu planning. The level is probably best suited to children from 10 - 14, however, with some guidance and supervision my 8 year old can prepare most of the recipes. Recipes include all the basics from Vegetable soup to Chili to Banana Nut Bread, Brownies, Pies and Punch. All recipes inlcude an equipment list along with the ingredient list and clear, easy to follow step-by-step instructions with important safety tips like "wearing oven mits, remove the cookie sheet from the oven." We've tried several of the recipes and have not been disappointed. This junior version of the classic compares well. I expect that my daughter will one day take this cookbook off to college.

I bought this book out of college because I couldn't cook worth a flip. It's a great beginner's book - it takes nothing for granted! Later, when I married, I showed it to my husband and he began to take an interest in cooking because the book made it so easy. This is a very helpful beginner's cookbook, for any age.

Just purchased the New Fanny Farmer Junior Cookbook here on Amazon for an amazing price of less than $3.00- It is fabulous! Not only is it hardcover and absolutely beautiful, but all the recipes are great- I got a second copy to give to my 19 year old who is just setting up house- Has some of the same recipes from the 1965 edition, but mostly it is all new up-to-date delicious eating. Lots of meat dishes, main dishes, vegetables and basic great desserts and beverages. The perfect cookbook for someone just starting out, or for someone like me- loves to bake and cook, but only simple economical real-food recipes that my whole family will eat- this is it! If you still enjoy old-school cooking like white sauces, tuna casseroles, etc (made with milk not cream so it can be reasonably healthy) then it is still worthwhile to get the 1965 edition also- for less than $3.00 each why not?

I love this cookbook! I got it at least 15 years ago from an aunt and I still use it. Many of my earliest recipes came from this book. The recipes are consistently good and the tips are great. It doesn't have color pictures, which I found uninteresting as a 10 year old, but a year or two later I was grateful for all the helpful tips this book contains. Good format. Highly recommended.
