Book Description

October 19, 1993
Actress and author of the the beloved novel FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE, Fannie Flagg has long collected recipes from that famed cafe on which the movie was based. Now, due to popular demand, she joyfully shares those recipes along with some wonderful (and hilarious) observations about food and life.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Flagg, author of the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe , later made into the movie Fried Green Tomatoes , follows up both with something culinary and, logically, Southern. Her Alabama-inspired fare may not be healthy, but it's genuine, including blue plate specials and plenty of gravies (chicken; giblet), stews (Brunswick; beef), pies (pecan; black bottom), and jams (muscadine). This jauntily designed cookbook also offers enough first-person splash to entertain. "When I moved to California, I found myself surrounded by health freaks," Flagg whines, and explains how the South helped her to get revenge: with biscuits, cobblers, "creatures that swim" (e.g., fried oysters, which really don't), creamed onions, and fried okra. And, three recipes for fried green tomatoes. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal

Flagg, author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Caf e (Random, 1987) and of the screenplay for the popular movie inspired by the book, admits that she is no cook--but she loves to eat. And so she has collected favorite recipes from the real cafe that was her model, The Irondale Cafe in Irondale, Alabama, run by her great-aunt for more than 50 years and still going strong. All the traditional dishes are here, from grits to barbecue to black bottom pie, along with the author's irreverent, irresistible commentary on Southern cooking and culture. Quotes from Fried Green Tomatoes and period photographs further add to Flagg's atmospheric text. Recommended for most collections.

I love this cookbook! Here's a sampling of some of the recipes you will find within: Down Home Crab Cakes,Southern Barbecue,Turnip Greens,Cheese Grits,Lane Cake,---this book the is the absolute essence of Southern Cafe food! There is an abundance of recipes-some you wouldn't expect-and three Fried Green Tomato recipes. The Buttermilk Biscuit recipe is the best I have ever used.Lots of wonderful antecdotes on Alabama,Hollywood, the Piggly Wiggly, the movie- plenty of old time photos.A class act.Two words of caution: #1.)Ignore Fannie's Ode to Grapico-DON'T try the stuff! It's grape soda that will make your teeth ache for an hour it's so damned sweet! and #2.)These recipe's are NOT for the "calorically challenged"-but buy it anyway! What a great read

4.0 out of 5 stars old recipes, October 15, 2002
By A Customer

I recently checkout the cookbook at my public library and upon my surprise were some recipes that my mother used to make. This is a plus for me since my mother is no longer living and we didn't write down some of them. For someone who likes the old time cooking this is a wonderful book.

This is a treasure to have. I have used some of the recipes and they are very good.
But buying the book is worth it just to have the comments!! Fannie Flagg is such
an extraordinary author..especially if you love the South. After meeting her at a book signing, I realized then that I would want any and everything she writes!!
