Illuminating reading for anyone interested in Fanon,
By Rm Pithouse "Richard Pithouse" (Durban, KwaZulu-Natal South Africa) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Fanon's Dialectic of Experience (Paperback)
This is an extraordinary book on many levels. It makes a profound contribution to Fanon scholarship by the simple (but utterly rigorous) act of taking Fanon seriously. Sekyi-Otu reads, and reads very carefully and with a deep democratic commitments, the whole of Fanon's work as an unfolding dramatic narrative. He pays precise and careful attention to what Fanon actually says and weaves the many insights produced by his rigorous attention into a broader consideration of the failures of post-colonial African states and in particular the general collapse into authoritarianism. Fanon is so routinely co-opted into the service of exclusively metropolitan concerns that Sekyi-Otu's African reading of Fanon is a very welcome and very important contribution to Fanon scholarship. Sekyi-Otu also writes extraordinarily well. His carefully and imaginatively crafted sentences reach out to the traces of everything from Beatles'songs to Hegel and speak with a compelling originality. This is an extraordinary book that no one interested in Fanon's work can afford to ignore. |
