5.0 out of 5 stars Feels like you are at Disneyland, August 24, 2005
This review is from: Fantasmic! Good Clashes with Evil in a Nighttime Spectacular (Includes Main Street Electrical Parade Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
This CD combines two of the most popular after dark shows at Disneyland on one CD. Both of these are sold seperatley for the same price so this is a good deal. Some years ago, workmen at Disneyland drained the main river, known as the "Rivers of America", and started digging and fussing about. They were installing wiring, water jets and fountains, pyrotechnics, sound systems, lighting, and much more to support a new show known as "Fantasmic!". The new after dark show is better than their parades, a multi-sensory experiance that needs to be seen to be believed. Features live actors, costumes, giant inflatables, puppets, boats, fireworks, and most importantly a music score. This CD includes the music, narration, the voices, and sound effects. Originally released in 1995 and made on the old "Disneyland Records" label.

The Main Street Electrical Parade is so popular it has the record for being brought back from retirement the most times. It has also traveled to other parks. The electronic music is very catchy and the different phases of the parade mingle in and out of the main music score. The CD has the complete show.

Both shows together give you a CD that is 40 minutes in length.

This CD from 1992 (#52001 on the disc itself) is only two tracks, but they are both long. Fantasmic clocks in at 26:02 and MSEP at 14:18 when loaded into my iTunes collection of CDs.

Fantasmic, as presented on this disc, is the whole Disneyland (not WDW) show---music, dialogue, and sound effects. It includes these elements as listed on the CD artwork:
1) Opening 2:08
2) Mickey the Sorcerer 1:01
3) Flowers 0:48
4) Kaa & Monkeys 1:14
5) Elephants 0:52
6) Puppets 0:31
7) Jiminy, Monstro 1:48
8) Peter Pan & Pirates 2:34
9) Princesses Medley: 1:52
10) Evil Queen, Magic Mirror 0:44
11) Transformation to Witch, Magic Mirror 2:05
12) Chernabog 1:09
13) Maleficent & Mickey 1:48
14) Dragon & Mickey 1:02
15) Finale 3:23
16) Exit Music 2:59

All 16 elements make up the one track of 26:02 on the CD. Fantasmic on this CD is excellent! I felt like I was right there watching the show over the water.

Next is the Main Street Electrical Parade, obviously current enough as of the 1992 date of this CD, but I don't know how old this version is. It was finalized by at least 1980 for the 25th Anniversary of Disneyland, attested by the inclusion of that element of music in the below list (#12). Whatever the date of this version, here are the elements as listed on the CD artwork:
1) Opening and Announcement 0:48
2) Blue Fairy 1:04
3) Wonderland 1:04
4) Cinderella's Ball 1:03
5) Dumbo's Circus 1:05
6) Pinocchio Underwater 1:02
7) Pinocchio at Pleasure Island 1:02
8) Peter Pan & Pirate Ship 1:08
9) Dwarf Mine 1:04
10) Pete's Dragon 1:03
11) Return To Oz 1:04
12) Disneyland's 25th Anniversary 1:02
13) To Honor America 1:04
14) Blue Fairy (Reprise) 1:11
15) Closing and Announcement 0:32

All 15 elements make up the one track of 14:18 on the CD. Now for a little CD/vinyl history of MSEP:

The Main Street Electrical Parade is really nice on this CD because it is the longest CD version I know of. I have several versions both on CD, vinyl LP, and from those old 70s 7-inch vinyl records from Disneyland and WDW. Two of them run just past 10 minutes and 11 minutes, respectively, but this track is a whopping 14:18! Also of note is that the vocal intro says "Disneyland proudly presents....". The 1999 CD is from the Magic Kingdom in WDW and is introduced as such. The 2001 CD from DCA mentions "Disney's". Obtain whichever version you want. Some of the shorter available CD cuts (notably some "Official Album" CDs) don't even have a vocal introduction for the MSEP, just the music.

Even the newer DCA version ("Disney's Electrical Parade" CD; Walt Disney Records 60054-7; 2001) is only 9:57 in iTunes, though the CD cover says 11:06. No problems occur upon playback and it's not cut off at the end. I find it strange that the cover would be off by 1:09. Interestingly, Disney's 1999 WDW CD release of MSEP on its own CD (Walt Disney Records 60024-7; 1999; no insert or front cover was ever made) was 11:06. Strange how that is the listed time for the "Disney's Electrical Parade" CD.

The Tokyo Disneyland version ("Tokyo Disneyland's Electrical Parade Dreamlights"; Walt Disney Records AVCW 12236; 2001) is 11:03. The newer "Dreamlights" version in Tokyo is 26:11, but it's not quite the same as the original, but pretty cool to hear, with English and Japanese weaving together in a very long cut. Both tracks are on the same CD.

With the version I'm reviewing (14:18), I hear elements that the other long versions don't have. I find each version nice enough in their own way, so the variety is really nice.

Earlier, I mentioned those 7-inch vinyl releases of the MSEP from the 1970s from Disneyland and WDW. I came across a CD version on eBay of the 1977 WDW 7-inch vinyl record (record #5-WD). This CD is from Japan. It's weird, but it is from the Walt Disney Company. The CD number is PCCD-00001. The date on the disc is MCMLXXXX (1990)by the Walt Disney Company. Below that date is MCMLXXXVI (1986) by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, Inc. On the edge of the disc is "All Rights Reserved. Manufactured by Pony Canyon, Inc., Japan). This CD is Side 1 and Side 2 edited together. Even the fade-out from Side 1 of the vinyl and fade-in from Side 2 of the vinyl is there, unedited. It's is literally both vinyl sides back-to-back. It is weird how no attempt was made to edit out the fade-out/fade-in. I had no idea such a CD was available. I've never seen one of the other 7-inch vinyl versions on CD. There is a smallish paper insert in the CD jewel case with English and Japanese, and Mickey's picture; as well as the serial number of the CD, and those two dates. The CD does have a cheap multi-colored striped insert with a picture of the original 7-inch record. Printed on it is "Disney's Main Street Electrical Parade". If you can find it, grab it.

In conclusion, if you want the whole Fantasmic show from Disneyland, this CD is the one to get. If you also like the idea of having the longest-ever version (apparently) of the MSEP, this disc has that, too. A great combination. Highly recommended if you can track it down. I don't think it's that hard to come by, so good luck looking. Also, look around for the other versions, too. It's fun to have several versions of the MSEP.

Fantasmic! is the BEST show at Disneyland. The fact that it's been running for so long and people STILL stake out their seats hours in advance is a testament to the genius of this show. :)

Main Street Electrical Parade...what can I say? The music is so infectious you'll be humming it for days. :P
