Editorial Reviews

After leaving The Byrds in '66, Clark faced uncertainty-until he teamed with banjoist extraordinaire Doug Dillard. Informal jam sessions gave way to this 1968 LP, which set the template for the new sound of country-rock; this thoroughly intoxicating classic (featuring future Eagle Bernie Leadon) includes Out on the Side; She Darked the Sun; Don't Come Rollin'; The Radio Song; In the Plan , and more!

7. In the Plan

Bob Irwin's mastering of "The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark" is probably the best version released on CD to date. Irwin gives the album a nice, warm sounding transfer that avoids the tricks used all too often for remasters such as over compression or peak limiting. As to how this compares to the Mobile Fidelity release I can't comment because I've only heard that version once and never owned it although as I recall, this compares favorably with it (but keep in mind I listened to this on my system vs. someone else's for the Mobile Fidelity release).

Packaged as a digipak Sundazed has once again done a terrific job with this reissue. My only complaint is that there aren't any bonus tracks and, quite honestly, BOTH Dillard and Clark albums could have fit on one CD (along with the single the band recorded)and I would have preferred that it was presented that way for this edition. Even though the second album wasn't quite as strong (and Clark's involvement was dimnished) both albums are worth while to pick up particularly for Clark fans.

Highly recommended.

Fantastic Expedition was one of three essential country-rock albums released in 1968, the other two being Sweetheart of the Rodeo by Gene Clark's former group, the Byrds, and Wheatstraw Suite by Douglas Dillard's former group, the Dillards. But while I love Wheatstraw Suite and greatly enjoy Sweetheart of the Rodeo, my preference is undeniably for this album. Being born in the Missouri Ozarks and growing up in the Kansas City blues center can only have contributed positively to Clark's powerfully expressive country-blues vocals. Dillard and future-Eagle, Bernie Leaden, provide perfectly complementary harmony vocals that rival the best of the Byrds. Instrumentally, Dillard was among the most gifted virtuosos you'll ever have the pleasure to hear, and he is in fine form here, accentuating the melodies without overpowering them. Leadon compliments Dillard, primarily on guitar, and a guest performance by Chris Hillman on mandolin is superb. The rest of the band is also excellent, including Clark who never played a note of guitar for the Byrds. But the quality that really sets this album apart from its peers is the incredible level of songwriting, primarily by Gene Clark. Clark wrote lyrics with a spiritually searching, Dylanesque quality, and matched them with McCartneyesque melodies underpinned with melancholy. Every original song is exceptional, and the one cover, "Git it On Brother", shows off Dillard's sizzling banjo and the group's amazing harmonies. Enjoy!

Even if you have every CD version of this great LP, buy the Sundazed reissue. Sundazed has rightfully earned their reputation for rich and pristine re-mastering and totally faithful reissues. As far as the music ... If you still have not yet heard this LP, don't waste any more time reading reviews and get this CD!

I have only recently discovered the genius that was Gene Clark and this album really shows what a great musician he was. This great country rock album has some gorgeous toe tapping tunes and is a trillion times better than the nonsense produced by the likes of Keith Urban etc.

I first heard and bought this album, The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard and Clark, way back in 1970 in California and quite honestly wore the album out. I was so happy to find this album in a well recorded CD on Amazon.com a few years back and immediately ordered it. The playing in this CD is so tight and original that both Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles cite this fantastic album as a major influence in their music. It is shame that this album missed the charts; but that often happens to pioneer recordings. What is strange is that I am a classical music and hard bop, be-bop jazz fan. I also have a large collection of Hawaiian kihoalu or slack key guitar music. This is the only bluegrass album I own and I think that it is a rare classic.

A gem of an album, as fresh today as on the day it was first released. And a largely undiscovered gem of Americana, which really deserves broader recognition and appreciation.

What an amazing album! The songwriting, instrumental virtuosity (esp. Doug Dillard on banjo and Chris Hillman on mandolin), the vocals, and the arrangements are all outstanding. Even after all these years the album just works. IMHO this album is where country rock really begins. Wish I could five it 6 stars.
