This book, and its companion, Designing the Doll, are both fabulous. The text is clear and easy to read, the line drawings are excellent, and the wide array of figures in photographs is very impressive. The book is heavily illustrated, and Susanna not only knows what she's doing, but she also write a great book about it. I'm a professional sculptor, and so often times the books fall far short of their expectation. Not these! Susanna comes through with flying colors. A must have for anyone doing small figure crafting with the new polymer clays.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST have for doll makers!, January 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fantastic Figures: Ideas and Techniques Using the New Clays (Paperback)
This book is an excellent reference for doll crafters from novice to advanced! Unlike many doll sculpting books that are excellent at showing how to make a specific doll from start to finish. This book concentrates on how to think creatively and apply the sculpting techniques shown(which are beautifully presented) to a piece that will be exclusively yours. I have been sculpting dolls for several years now and found this book informative, well written, and full of good advice for reawakening my creative mind!

This review is from: Fantastic Figures: Ideas and Techniques Using the New Clays (Paperback)
This book is excellent! She covers everything; sculpting tools, armatures, anatomy, different clays, painting, costuming, wigging and the list goes on. Comments and tips from various doll artists are included with some amazing photographs of their work. The photo's alone are inspiring. Great instruction and a book definately worth having!

This book is packed with information! It leads you through all the steps you need to create a doll or character in polymer clay. From your very first idea to the complete costuming...the information is there. Ever wondered how to make shoes for your figures? It's in this book. There are some wonderful pictures of creations made by a variety of artists as well. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Instructions, July 28, 2001

Susanna Oroyan is a truly gifted teacher. Not only does she give easy-to-follow instructions, she teaches her readers to think for themselves and discover their own solutions. I enjoyed the examples she presented of other artists' work and her references to the photographs when explaining how to achieve a specific effect. Oroyan takes the reader from the basic to the most advanced techniques and it helped me complete a figure that had been giving me trouble. Fantastic Figures is a book I will return to again and again as I work on developing my own particular style.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, But For The Advanced Artist., June 17, 2004
This review is from: Fantastic Figures: Ideas and Techniques Using the New Clays (Paperback)
The book "Fantastic Figures: Ideas & Techniques Using the New Clays," by Susanna Oroyan is a great book on advanced techniques in clay. However, for a beginner like me it was a bit overwhelming. So I am placing it on my book shelf and hope to be skilled enough to use it some day. As the dolls in it are great examples of OOAKmanship!

This book is a great book... but, I am only giving it 4 stars because not all of the pictures of the dolls are in color. Many are in black and white. I have been making dolls for a couple of years and her instructions are great, but probably not for the beginnner. It is interesting to see the different mediums for OOAK dolls. She provides a lot of examples using different mediums.

What a fantastic book. I have used it so much as a reference in my dollmaking that I have the pages falling out of my book. Susanna is so encouraging of your own style of dollmaking. Creative impulse just flows from her book.
