From AudioFile

Ray Bradbury tells fourteen of his stories from the '40's and '50's. Some were futuristic then and remain so. Others are timeless explorations of human nature. Bradbury doesn't project emotion as an actor might, but his smooth Midwestern voice makes each dramatic situation clear. Without actually creating new voices, he keeps numerous characters distinct by changing speech pattern and inflection. Before each story Bradbury speaks introspectively of experiences in his life which led to its creation. The earnestness in his voice during these introductions nicely balances and enriches his more controlled presentation of the stories. D.J. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

5.0 out of 5 stars Author's reading brings fresh insights, July 6, 2000

This review is from: Fantastic Tales of Ray Bradbury (Audio Cassette)
Ray Bradbury reads a dozen of his best-known stories, and two excerpts from _Dandelion Wine_. While there are other stories of his I like better than e.g., "The Smile", Bradbury certainly has more experience reading his stories and (presumably) chose the stories that worked best. Bradbury does a great job reading these stories -- *not* because he's a great voice actor, but because he has insights into the stories that (literally) no one else has. I know these stories fairly well, but Bradbury's reading often made me see them in a different light -- particularly "John Huff's Leavetaking", from _Dandelion Wine_, the ending of which I had misinterpreted all these years. For long-time fans like me, Bradbury's introductions to the stories, in which he tells a little about how each one got to be written, are a particular delight. Highly recommended, if you can stand to purchase cassettes.

CONTENTS: Introduction; The Lake; The Smile; The Foghorn; The Veldt; The Crowd; John Huff's Leavetaking (from _Dandelion Wine_); Illuminations (from _Dandelion Wine_); The Illustrated Man; Marionettes, Inc; The Pedestrian; The Dwarf; There Will Come Soft Rains; A Sound of Thunder; Fever Dream
