This novel captivates its readers in the intricacies of two lives that one would not rationally pair but that is the beauty of this novel and an insight to the mystery of life. Mr. McGroarty challenges the reader with this dichotomy and it is with great success. it is a brilliant work and one that is hard to fathom as one that comes from such a young writer.

I love a book that makes you feel invested in the characters. I felt I knew Charlie and Jake so well that I had to keep reading to see how their stories end. McGroarty has you rooting for these two sad souls to forgive their pasts and find their happiness.

I could not wait to get to the next page as i read and the ending was mind blowing! Mr. McGroarty you have produced a true winner. I could see this being made into a movie. It was easy to pick 5 stars for this lovely story. It sounded really interesting as I considered downloading it (it was free at the time), but soon it became a book I could barely put down and was very sorry to see come to an end. I won't give away any of the plot, I will say that it was unique in that each character took on a life of their own and all could be someone that I've known, that's how well developed they were written. It's tender, tough, loving, and heartbreaking and I highly recommend it.

Charlie and Jake are the unlikeliest of people to cross paths, let alone have any interaction. One is a city bus driver, never having done a bad thing in his life, doing the best he can to support his family, and dealing with personal issues. The other is a convicted felon who served 30 years in prison, has just been released back into the world, and is trying to decide what to do with his life.

But fate has plans for the two of them. When Charlie meets Jake, he stalks the ex-con and insists he accompany him on a cross country journey because of visions he's been having. Jake looks at him the way anyone might if they were approached by a total stranger claiming fate brought them together, as if he were insane. But something nags at Jake and they embark on an adventure they both hope will lead them to some answers.

I started Fantastik by reading the back of the book, and I was immediately torn. The blurb both on Amazon and the book states that they set out on this journey together, but only one lives to tell about it. It was a bit shocking to have this big of an idea thrown out there before I had even opened the front cover. But despite that, it actually made me want to read it even more. Who gets to live? Charlie or Jake? For the risk C. A. McGroarty puts forth offering such a large tidbit, the reader is greatly rewarded and it will tug at your heart.

I found the book easily to read and that made it quick to get through. The transitioning between characters was generally well done with only a few areas in which I had to backtrack and re-read to make sure I knew which character I was following. This isn't a big issue though. The story flows well, but the road trip part of it which I anticipated to be the longer part of the story, actually came up a bit short. It's still a well thought out book and it was enjoyable to read.

I'm giving Fantastik 4 stars for being...fantastic... (how could I resist?). I liked this book.

It's got religious overtones, that's for sure. Like the Bible, "Fantastik" wants the reader to accept the concepts of destiny, blind faith and reincarnation as fact. That's problematic for me but then again, Stephen King gets away with some wild ideas. It's just I wasn't expecting Christian dogma. So now you know. Eyes open.

What's really troubling to me with this book, though, is the generic nature of the story. The characters act, look and sound like stock characters. Let me give it a try:

--- Jake stood with one foot on the bumper of his old truck looking into the distance, thinking about his life since Nam, all the people he'd met, the men he'd got drunk with, the women he'd loved. The smell of dry grass rose up his nostrils as he chewed on a stalk of wheat. "Ya know, Charlie. Life's a funny thing." Charlie glanced over at Jake's weathered face. "I hear ya," he said, grinning knowingly. They shared a comfortable silence as they pondered the world around them and their lives in it.----

There are pages of this and it's as easy as momma's sweet peach pie to write it, like rolling off a log, like.... Gad. There's very little detail or specificity about the lives of the two main characters when it comes to their motivations. At the bottom of it all is why Charlie travels with Jake. In fact halfway through the book, when the two finally meet, we are treated to pages of dialogue in which this question is asked dozens of times. The question keeps coming up but is never satisfactorily answered. It would have been interesting to have some other, plausible, less holy reason for Charlie's actions but no, we're left with blind faith and not much else. And if you don't believe in destiny or faith or acts of gods, this one won't work for you. It didn't for me.
