Book Description

This beautifully illustrated book focuses on the major works of Gustave Doré and sets the artist in the context of French nineteenth-century art. Best known as a superb book illustrator—his illustrated Bible was in its day the most successful book in the world—Doré also gained international repute as a sculptor and a painter.

The book is deceivingly titled and should have properly been called "Gustave Doré in American Collections", because that's what it is. In consequence, it offers a rather lopsided view of his art and oeuvre. His paintings, and the topic of religion are given lengthy consideration. Not surprising, since Doré's Bible illustrations became especially popular in our god-fearing land. Although one of the contributors concedes that Doré's "greatest and most long-lasting fame came from his illustrations for classical and popular literature", this aspect is given short shrift. His illustrations for Balzac's Contes Drolatiques are, together with those for Rabelais and Cervantes, his illustrative masterpiece. But Balzac's name is absent from the index, and not a single illustration appears in the book. The same is true for an early (1854)stroke of Doré's genius, his Histoire de la Sainte Russie (in its English version called The Rare and Extraordinary History of Russia).
The book was well produced and expensive even at list (about $65). It's already out of print; the prices asked by third-party vendors on Amazon are utterly unwarranted. Borrow it from your library instead.

Such detail and emotion in his work. He was so prolific too. A real inspiration an a great example of what quality illustrative art should look like. Of course from an artist's perspective, studying all the etchings make the importance of values really clear. Dore was an incredibly passionate artist who created an incredible body of work. A classic book to have.
