Creatures from the darkest corners of the realm strike out against their opponents with horrible new attacks that can kill with single blow. Keep your guard up when fighting with the beasts of BattleLore: Creatures.Wood GiantThe Wood Giant is variant Creature based on the promo-only Hill Giant figure with new lair and new abilities. This Green Banner Creature attacks enemies from afar with flurry of logs hurled from any forest on the battlefield.Rock ElementalLike the Wood Giant, the Rock Elemental is based on figure (Earth Elemental) that was formerly only able to be obtained by special promotion. The Rock Elemental is Red Banner Creature that is able to be summoned via Magic Vortex to almost anywhere on the battlefield.HydraThe Hydra is totally new Blue Banner Creature that gets more powerful when it is damaged. As its multiple heads take hits, they are removed and possibly replaced by even more heads. With an attack based on the number of heads the Creature currently has, the Hydra is fearsome foe indeed.BattleLore: Creatures Expansion includes;3 Unique Creature Figures, Wood Giant, Hydra with interchangeable head/neck pieces, Rock Elemental3 Creature BannersA Rules Booklet, including new adventures2 Landmark Tiles7 Web Tokens7 Poison Tokens1 Conjure Token7 Cards, Tactics Card, Creature Summary Cards, Landmark Summary Cards

First off - the MSRP of this game is NOT $38.95. The publisher, Fantasy Flight Games (FFG), lists the price as $34.95 on it's website. Other online retailers list the MSRP as $34.95. Moreover, it retails at both of my local games stores for $34.95. As such, the listed discount price is misleading and, in my opinion, outright dishonest. Amazon does this a lot.

Now, to the product itself. Since acquiring the Battlelore license from Days of Wonder, FFG has released a number of expansions to the base Battlelore game. Creatures includes three "new" miniatures: the hill giant, rock elemental and hydra. Two of the three - the rock elemental and hill giant - were previously released in limited supply as promotional miniatures by Days of Wonder (although the rock elemental was called an "earth elemental.") The hydra is a pretty good sculpt with decent detail. It requires some assembly (you have to add the heads)but makes an impression on the battlefield due to its relative size.

The expansion contains banners for each miniature (red, blue and green), summary cards, effects tokens and 4 new adventures. Also included is a summary card for upgrading the spider included in the base game to a more powerful, "Blue Widow." The creature rules contain minimal revisions and clarifications to those included in the base game. The rules are available for download at FFG's website.

Is Creatures a worthwhile addition to the base game? Yes. Is it worth the price? Not at $34.95 (or for $38.95). For the same price, the Dragons expansion offers larger, better-looking sculpts that have a much more dynamic impact on the battlefield (both in terms of abilities - they fly and breath fire/acid/cold - and aesthetics).
