I have been an avid fan of the miniature game, Blood Bowl, for many years. When I first heard about the card game, I was apprehensive. The game's designer, Jay Little, also handled the revamp of the Warhammer RPG, and is a huge fan of the Warhammer universe, so it couldn't have been in better hands.
The card game focuses on the team management aspect of the game, as opposed to the miniature games' focus on the football games themselves. Each player acts as the GM for a specific team from the Warhammer universe. Dwarfs, stolid if somewhat slow, best known for grinding down the pitch. Humans, good all around, able to throw, run, and crush opponents. Wood Elves, best known for throwing and avoiding being crushed. The forces of Chaos, seeking to beat down opponents and are not above cheating for a win. Orcs, brutes who bring a Troll and goblins to the field. The final team available is the Skaven, hideous ratmen with a touch of speed and a hidden dagger or two.
Once players have their teams, the football games are touched on, with players going over a number of "highlght reels." This provides a great sense of the football season, but keeps the game moving quickly.
The game is fairly fast paced, and can be played in about 45 minutes, once you have the rules down. That being said, the rules aren't too difficult, and there isn't a high learning curve. For experienced players, multiple seasons could be completed in a night, making for a great story arc for the teams. Overall, a very solid game.
